Fudayl Ibn 'Iyyad رحمه الله said:

"I found that my soul feels sympathy for people who are called friends, whereupon I tried their friendship in practice, and as a result I came to the conclusion that most of them are envious of the benefits available to me; they do not cover a person's small mischief, they do not know their comrade's rights, and they do not help their friend financially. I thought about it and realized that many of them are envious of the advantages that man possesses. Almighty Allah is jealous when the heart of a believer feels sympathy for something other than Him, from which Allah makes this world and its inhabitants unflattering to man so that he will be attached only to Allah.

It is necessary that you treat all people as acquaintances without revealing your secrets to any of Allah's creatures. You should take as friends only those who help you in a difficult moment. Treat such "acquaintances" superficially and communicate with them only when necessary, with caution, then withdraw from them and go about your business, trusting in your Creator, for only He brings good and only He removes evil."
