A man asked Imam ash-Shafi'i رحمه الله:
"Which is better for a person, to be relieved and receive opportunities, or to suffer trials and hardships and be rewarded by Allah?"
Al-Shafi'i رحمه الله replied:
"No opportunity and relief will be given to him until he goes through trials and hardships.
For Allah tested Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa and Muhammad ﺻﻠﻮﺍﺕ ﷲ, and when they endured it, He gave them the victory and opportunities.
So let no one think that he will be completely free from pain in this world."
