It has come to our knowledge that when Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal رحمه الله was imprisoned, one of the prison guards came to him and asked him:
"O Abu Abdullah, the hadith which speaks of the oppressor and those who help him - is it authentic?"
He said, "Yes."
The prison guard then asked:
"So am I considered the tyrant's helper?"
Imam Ahmad رحمه الله said:
"No, the helpers of a tyrant are those who comb you, wash your clothes, cook your food, and buy and sell from you.
As for you, you yourself are one of the tyrants."
