Anas ibn Malik رحمه الله transmitted:

"It was the custom of the Arabs to take their servants with them on a journey, and so did Abu Bakr and 'Umar, who took a servant with them on their journey.

One day they went to bed and when they woke up, they found that the servant was also sleeping without having prepared food for them. And one of them said to the other:

"This man is sleeping as if he were in his own house!"

They woke him up and said to him:

"Go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and tell him:

"Abu Bakr and 'Umar convey salaam to you and ask you for something to eat!"

The Prophet ﷺ said to the servant:

"Pass salaam to them and inform them that they have already eaten!"

They were shocked at this and came to the Prophet ﷺ and said:

"O Messenger of Allah! We sent to you to ask for food, and you said:

"You have already eaten!"
- And what did we have for breakfast?!"

The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The flesh of your brother. I swear by Him in Whose hands is my soul, verily, I see pieces of his flesh between your teeth!"

Abu Bakr and 'Umar said to the Prophet ﷺ:

"Ask Allah to forgive us!"

To which he replied:
"Let him (the servant) ask forgiveness for you!"
