Edward

Trackers had talent for finding things...and people.

Tracking was everything to them. So much, that no one had ever really seen them as they were always tracking. Most trackers had joined the Volturi, a clan based in Italy. Rare were those who were living in the open since their talent was sought by the most powerful vampires.

And yet, here we were, trying to outrun one.

I was behind the wheel of Emmett's Jeep, heading north. I once considered going to the Denali coven and ask for their help, but it was too close to water. It was impossible to hunt a vampire underwater. He could come out anywhere, which would make us regroup and start over.

I wanted to end this quickly and go back to our routine, but the few stops we had to take to refuel were slowing us down.

I used the large gas cans Emmett had loaded in the backseat, and moved in a rush, making sure the tracker would think that we were trying to race away again. I was pleased when he came closer to watch, because Bella's socks that I had kept in my pocket were enough to leave the faintest trace of her scent in the air.

I didn't try to be evasive about our route. All I wanted, was for the tracker to believe that I was so desperate to keep Bella away from him, that I had no clear destination in mind. That I was just trying to go somewhere I would feel safe. And he knew we had ressources. He knew that we had more abilities and ressources than any other vampire he had met.

We drove through the night, and the tracker still ran behind us, tiredless. How I wished he was closer enough for me to read his thoughts. He was running on higher ground, in the mountains. Although it took him miles from the road, he couldn't care less. The most important thing to him was that he could still see us. But I, on the other end, could only hear him here and there. But from the few words I had caught, I found out that he was actually enjoying this.

I suppressed my anger, thinking that all of this could've been avoided, had we not involved both Aiyanna and Bella in the game.

But soon, my anger made place for a sensation of pure satisfaction as I caught images that ran in Emmett's mind. He let himself think about what he'd do once he'd face the tracker. His imagination was pleasant to watch.

We drove the whole night, and it was almost 09 AM. Unlike the tracker, I was getting tired of this whole situation. And maybe, he was going to get tired of this as well. How long would it take him to understand that Bella wasn't actually with us ? How long would it take for him to get bored ?

"Ask Alice if she sees the hunter quitting before we're set." I told Carlisle in a low voice, knowing perfectly that if I couldn't hear James then he couldn't hear me either.

Carlisle complied quickly.

It took only two minutes for Alice to send the letter n.

As I knew we were getting close to Calgary, I knew I wouldn't go further. I needed to set the ambush and end this.

I turned off onto a small side road that curved around back to Calgary, but it wasn't the fastest way to get anywhere. This was a new behavior that would have gotten the tracker's interest. In the car, both Carlisle and Emmett were getting more tense, knowing what was to come.

"Emmett, I'll buy you a new Jeep." I breathed.

No worries - Emmett thought, chuckling.

Emmett was more than tensed. He was excited. Thrilled. Eager to get to a fight.

And strangely, I was as excited as he was. My only motivation was to end this and go home.
