Haya

Rebecca Khalla and Aariz himself had chosen my Valima lehenga. The most accurate way to describe the colour was a hybrid of vanilla and very pale gold. It was heavily embroidered, with intricate silver and gold patterns that made it look like the dress of a princess from the pages of history. The sheer dupatta was dotted with silver beads, and the beautiful heavy border matched the design of the dress. Rebecca Khalla had also given me a beautiful heavy silver necklace, with pearls, along with matching jhumka earrings, which had chains that were pinned to my hair. This set itself added greatly to the historical-regal appearance.

"Aariz is like my son. I'll do everything in my capabilities for him and his wife." Rebecca Khalla had smiled as I'd thanked her for being so generous.

Aariz himself was wearing a black suit, from my side of the family, along with a deep maroon tie.

From the parlour, Khalla helped me settled into the front passenger seat of Aariz's car, tucking in my lehenga. "You two go ahead. I'll follow in my car. I'll see you at the venue."

Aariz and I smiled at her, before my husband pulled the car out of the parking space.

"Excited about seeing your family?" He asked, taking my hand in his, as he kept the other one on the steering wheel.

"Very much so." I nodded.

"Excited about going home with them tonight?" He gave me a small smile.

I stared at our clasped hands. My henna-covered hand, along with my glittering-gold nail-polish looked almost unrecognisable to me. I was used to having paint cover my hands, but not for them to be adorned in such a way. "Are you looking forward to one more quiet night on your own, without me?"

He laughed, causing me to smile. "I don't know how to answer that without offending you."

I giggled. "Be honest."

"Honestly? I wish you didn't have to spend the night there." He shrugged. "But also honestly, I know how excited you and your family must be at the prospect of this one night, and I am not heartless enough to feel bad about this."

"You are invited, you know."

"I know, Haya. And I'm not the egoistic or arrogant type who would never stay at his wife's parents house. It's just that I have an unmissable appointment in the morning, and it would have been rude to leave your parents' house early."

"My parents would understand."

"That their son-in-law left at six in the morning on the night after the Valima? Even if they do understand, I wouldn't feel right about it, Haya. I'll definitely stay another time to compensate, In Sha Allah."
