Lola POV:

I waved wildly at Axel as he strolled up the darkened road, happy that he had actual show up at the shop at 5 in the morning as requested when he could have just never returned.

Although I did have him personally call his parol officer and let him know he was working here so he couldn't run.

That could be part of it.

He frowned at me staring at my clothes, "...the pie dress wasn't a one time thing was it?"

Grinning I shook my head, "Nope! I like my clothes fluffy and colorful and sweet." A frowned at him, "do you wear anything other than black? its icky."

Staring at me with those odd lavender eyes he sighed, "how long do I have to work here?"

Looking at him with wide eyes I made a magic rainbow with my hands, "forever and ever and ever."

He grunted, "Just unlock the fucking door its to early for this shit and motels are not the most comfortable thing."

I frowned, "you slept in a motel? those things are dirty and gross."

He snorted, "not like I had a choice. did you find anything about me your gramps left you?"

"didn't look."

He cursed at me. "Then let me stay in the shop on his merit alone!"

"no."

"Why not!"

I shrugged unlocking the door and skipping inside, "no reason. I just don't like the idea of you in here, for all I know you could be the cookie monster in disguise out to eat my shops cookies."

He sneered, "if I was going to eat any of your cookies it wouldn't be the ones in your shop."

My brows furrowed, "what cookies would you eat then?"

He stared at me long in hard, "yours."

"are you a prostitute?"

"no."

I sighed, "boring."

He rolled his eyes at me, "why am I here so early?"

"to do work. heavy lifting and all that jazz. Clean my floor. you know labor?"

"And what are you going to do?"

I giggled, "bake, make chocolates, roll candy until my arms fall off."

He eyed me strangely, "you don't have anyone else who works with you?"

"No...they all left when grandpa died, they didn't want to work under some little girl. It was a good think I had already learned how to make all the candy otherwise..." I trained off still a little hurt everyone had quit when I was left with the shop, their words still stung.

No one wanted to work under an eccentric, loud, girl. Who technically still should have been in high school,

Grunting Axel nodded, "Kay..so cleaning?"

"Mop is in the storeroom and the daily delivery should be here in about an hour just let me know when it arrives and start moving boxes inside while I sign for it. Clean the windows and the display case too."

Silently, he went to work.

"Welcome to Sugar Sugar!"

Three children scampered into the shop, oohing and ahing at the arrangements of sweets around the shop and in the display case. And old woman with a cane followed them in with a sweet smile, "good morning miss."

I smiled, "good morning ma'm good morning kids!"

The kids all waved at me happily, "Hi candy lady!"

The old woman smiled and I laughed a bit, "What brings you lot here today?"

"Grandma said you have the best candy in town!"

I winked at them, "well I don't like to brag...but I like to think Its pretty sweet."

They laughed gleefully at my terrible pun, the little girl in the middle pointing at the display case, "We haven't ever been to this town because grandma always comes visit us so we want to try the best stuff you have!"

I pretend to think over it for a second, "hmmm well our lollipops are all made right here in the shop...they are pretty yummy...our bonbons are to die for..oh I know! how do you kids like fudge?"

The squealed, "FUDGE!"

I laughed, shooting them a wink, "well it just so happens I just finished a batch of my Lolas famous rainbow fudge!"

The oohed at me, the little girl piping up again, "whats that!"

I grinned, "well on the bottom its fruity crispy treats, and then its all white chocolate and marshmallow fudge with rainbow candy bits in it and topped off with rainbow sugar sprinkles!"

Their faced lit up as the scrambled to their grandmother, "can we grandma! can we? can we!"

Old woman chuckled happily at the children and nodded.

handing me my money with slightly shaking hands speaking tales of her age, "Thank you miss Lola...its ages since I have been to this shop, the last time you were just a toddler."

I smiled wistfully at her, "well its always nice to know Sugar Sugar stays in the mind."

She laughed a bit, "The little ones just live for sweets."

I winked, "so do I!"

As if by sheer totally not okay coincidence Axel picked that moment to walk out, shirt coated in flower, "food Storage is all organized..oh."

The old woman smiled, "boyfriend?"

I shook my head, "random stranger."

I think she took it as a joke because she went on about young love.

~~

The moment the old woman and the kids left the shop Axel glowered at me, "when do I get to leave?"

"where would you go? back to the motel?"

His glared sharpened.

"Look Lava Cake, your life sucks, I'm the reason you can pay for that dirty place."

"Lola."

"Lava."

He practically growled.

"...sooo you wanna live in my basement?"

His jaw dropped, "what?!"
