I walk out and then find Salina in her room. "I need to talk to you." I say.
Salina looks up from her phone. "What about?"
I sit on the edge of her bed. "I met someone."
She sits up. "Ooh, tell me all about him."
I frown. "It's not like that." She raises her eyebrows. "I was scouting out a new area and I decided to take a quick break. I went to this coffee shop and this human came in." I pause, remembering his smell. "I have never, never in my existence, smelled someone so good."
Salina frowns. Then she gets up and opens her closet, rummaging around until she pulls out a huge, thick, leather book. It has definitely been around for a long time by the look of it.
"What is that?" I ask.
"It's a book." She says.
"Obviously." I mutter.
"From the Regime." She adds.
The Regime was a small group of vampires, the oldest vampires in the world. They made all the decisions over clan region, clan rules, vampire turning, everything. No vampire dared challenge the Regime.
"Every clan has one." Salina continues. "I have it because James memorized it and I was interested."
"I'm second in command. Why have I not seen this?" I ask haughtily.
Salina shrugs, sitting down on the bed. "You never asked." She opens the book, flipping through the pages. Then she stops and points to a page. "The Scented One."
"The Scented One?" I phrase it as a sentence.
"Yes. 'The Scented One is a human that has a peculiar scent to a specific vampire. A common comparison is ice cream. Humans have a favourite flavor of ice cream, while vampires have a favourite flavour of blood. If a vampire feeds from several humans who aren't the Scented One, they will all taste about the same. The Scented One will not only smell incredibly mouth watering, but will taste so good, that it would be very difficult for the vampire to stop feeding. In most cases, the Scented One is often killed.'" Salina looks up from the page. "Does that sound about right?"
"He did smell very mouth watering." I reply after a minute. "I kept thinking about sinking my teeth in him. And I fed today. Is there anything more?"
Salina nods. "Just one more line. 'As the Scented One most commonly is also the One, vampires who end up draining their Scented One, kills themselves for feeling incredible attachment to the human.'"
"The One?"
"The One is a single human that a vampire takes a heightened attachment to. So much so that the vampire would do anything to protect the human. Even if it means killing a fellow vampire. The only way to know if the human is a vampire's One is the feeling of heightened attachment.'"
I sigh, looking down. "Should I talk to him?"
"If you want to." Salina says. "It's your choice."
I nod. That night, I travel back to the area. I search the streets in darkness, using my sense of smell to track Colby down. It wasn't long until I found him. I tracked him to a large apartment complex. I go inside to find his apartment, sniffing the air for his scent. When I find his apartment, in a corner on the seventh floor, I run outside and scale the wall to the balcony of his apartment. I stand in the shadows and peer in.
Colby was there, sitting on his couch, with a blond haired boy next him. Colby was leaning forward, a frown on his face. The blond one wasn't facing me, but he was leaning towards Colby.
"You seem upset about not talking to this girl." The blond one spoke.
Colby sighed. "I don't even know why." He says. "I just looked at her and all I wanted right then was her. When I got up to talk to her, she just left."
"Why do you care about not talking to her? You don't even know her name."
"I don't know, Sam."
"Maybe you'll see her again."
"Maybe." Colby sighs. "But if I do see her again, I hope Brennen isn't with me."
Sam frowns. "Why not?"
"Because he was teasing me about staring at her. It's not my fault that she was... very attractive."
"Hmm. I'll have to see this girl."
"If you do, don't tease me."
Sam's phone rings. He fishes it out of his pocket and glances at it. "I should head back. Kat's coming over soon."
Colby nods as Sam gets up and leaves. Colby pauses, then stands up and comes to the balcony door. I move deeper into the darkness and freeze, not daring to breathe, even though I didn't have to because I was technically dead. Colby opens the door and steps out, the slight breeze ruffling his hair. Thank God I'm not breathing.
I watch him closely as he leans forward on the balcony railing. After a minute, he frowns and turns, then gasps and grabs the railing, as he almost fell over, his eyes wide as he stares at me. Without thinking, I grab him and press my lips to his. He closes his eyes and melts into me. Then I release him and turn to jump off the balcony, landing on the ground below. I grin when I hear him rush to the railing, looking over. Keeping out of sight, I run back to the mansion.
