"He knows?" Salina asks, frowning. "Felix?"
I nod. "Yes, he knows. He knows about Colby."
Salina looks to Colby. "He knows your Regime?"
"He basically told us there's a spy here." He says. "That's how he knows."
"A spy." She repeats. She turns to me. "Did he say who?"
I shake my head. "No."
"And he doesn't know about Tommo?"
I pause. "He knows there's a spy. I don't know if he thinks it's Tommo, but Tommo's the only one he can suspect as far as I know. He's the 'new one' to the clan."
"He's in danger, then."
I nod. "I know. But he can also watch out for himself. I'm sure he'll think of a way to seem like he's not the spy."
Salina looks down at her hands. From her expression, I could tell she wanted to say something.
"What are you thinking?" I ask her.
She looks up. "A lot of things. From what you told me, he's planning on war." She says. "And about the spy, we need to find him. As for Colby, he's Regime. He has powers. He's going to be valuable."
"I'll help in any way I can." He says.
I give him a grateful smile. "Yes, he did seem like he's planning war."
Colby suddenly gasps, his eyes wide as he stares at Salina.
Salina and I both look at him, surprised. "What?" I ask.
He blinks, then tears his eyes away, looking down at his hands. Then he looks up at Salina. "Does the Regime need physical contact to read minds?"
I blink, frowning. "What?"
"Does the Regime need physical contact to read minds?"
"Yes, they do." Salina says. "Why?"
He looks back at Salina, and his next words were said so quietly, I barely heard them. "I-I saw your mind."
Both of us girls stare. "What did you say?" Salina asks.
"I saw your mind." His voice was louder. "I saw what you were thinking."
I turn to Salina. "What were you thinking?" Her eyes flick to me, and she looked a little scared. "Salina, what were you thinking?"
"I was thinking that if we're going to war, we need more clan members."
I turn to Colby, who nods. "Not just any new clan members." He says.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"The Trap House."
"I thought that if Colby has these new powers, maybe the rest of them do too." She says quickly.
I nod, thinking quickly. "Salina, I want you to search through every book and find anything you can about Regime powers. I want it reported to me." She nods, leaving quickly.
When she leaves, Colby looks to me. "What do you want me to do?" He asks.
"Nothing." I say. "You said you saw her thoughts. How?"
"I don't know." He says. "I was just thinking about the spy, and then I felt like I was watching a movie. Like I always did when Salina and I were practicing. I saw her thinking about the Trap House. I saw all of them with fangs."
I move to sit down on the edge of the bed, sighing. "Try to read my mind." I say. "Try to see what I'm thinking right now." He pauses, staring at me in confusion. Then I saw the confusion change to focus. We held eye contact for a few seconds, but I didn't feel anything. Nor apparently did Colby.
He shakes his head. "I don't know how I did it."
I take a breath. "I don't know what's going on, but I do know one thing." I say, as Colby sits down. "You aren't a normal vampire. Not even by Regime standards."
"Would they kill me? If they knew what I could do?" He asks. "I mean, Salina said they need physical contact. And if I could see into people's minds without touching them, what else can I do?"
"I don't know." I say. "I know I've said this a lot before, but this has never happened. Never since the creation of man. You are a first. And, correct me, in the future, if I'm wrong, but you might not be the last."
He nods, looking down. "At least I can teach them." He says. "If there does end up being more like me, I can help them."
"You could. But you also need to find out exactly what else you can do."
Days go by, and Colby works on his powers, secretly seeing into the clan's minds. At first, he couldn't figure out how to, but each time he tried, he figured it out and got better. Pretty soon though, it became unnerving how easily he could see into people's minds. Every time I felt that pulling sensation in my head, I'd look at Colby to see him watching me intently. I just had to raise my eyebrows at him and he'd stop, grinning.
After about a week and a half, Salina reports her findings to me, and I was shocked at what I learned.
"There's a prophecy." Salina tells me, holding out an open book. She points to a passage.
'He, who is born into arctic,
Thousands of years into recorded time,
Damned but altruistic,
He will lead others into prosperity,
With potent powers unknown.'
