I stare at the words on the yellowing page. I soundlessly word each word, taking it all in. "'Born into arctic'. He was born January. 'Recorded time'. That's each year. 'Damned but altruistic'. 'Potent powers unknown'." I look up at Salina. "That-that describes him."
"Exactly."
I lick my lips. "Where did you find this."
She holds the page with a finger, then closes the book to show me the cover. It was old. So old that the cover was peeling apart, the gold lettering almost gone, fading with time. "It's about the Regime. I don't think this book has been opened for a long time." She looks up at me. "Should he know?"
I don't answer. Instead, I take the book from her, opening to the page her finger kept open. I flicked back to the beginning of the chapter, my eyes moving side to side in a blur, reading. I go through each page, until the end of the chapter.
According to the chapter, the prophecy was created from a human Indian, back when humans were first created. He was talking to a docile vampire in front of a fire, and got the prophecy from the fire. It wasn't clear how, but the prophecy was recorded and passed down from generation to generation of vampire and Indian alike, but got lost pretty quickly. Quickly, I looked for the name of the Indian, but anywhere I looked, it was nowhere.
Snapping the book shut, I hand it back to Salina. "The prophecy was created by and Indian. I need the name. Once you have that, I need a living descendant."
She nods, but stays. "Will you tell him?" She asks.
"He's involved too much." I say. "He needs to know. Send him in, then find the name and descendant."
She leaves and seconds later, Colby appears in the room. "Salina said you needed me?"
"Close the door." I say. He does. "I've been having Salina search for anything that could help us with your powers."
"Has she found anything?" He asks.
I nod. "She did. She found a prophecy."
"A prophecy? What's it say?"
"'He, who is born into arctic, thousands of years into recorded time, damned but altruistic, he will lead others into prosperity, with potent powers unknown'." I repeat the words. "'Born into arctic'. 'Damned but altruistic'. 'Potent powers unknown'. Sound like someone you know?"
He stares. "Me."
I nod. "Yes, it's about you."
"When was it?"
"Beginning of man." I say. "It was created by an Indian. He was conversing with a vampire next to a fire when he saw the prophecy in the flames. Salina is looking for the Indian's name, and if possible, a living descendant."
"Why a living descendant?"
"The prophecy was passed down generation to generation of vampires and Indians alike. It's possible that the living descendant knows about it."
"And you'd want to talk to them?"
"Yes." I reply. "I feel I'm not the only one who wants to know as much as possible about this."
"I do want to know."
"Good." I say. "Until Salina finds them, however, I have a task for you."
"Yeah?"
"Can you get into people's minds undetected?"
"Maybe." He looked a little doubtful.
"You can try. I need you to see into everyone's mind. Everyone who is part of this clan. We need to find this spy of Felix's."
And so it went. Anytime Colby wasn't at the Trap House, he was at the mansion, seeing into the minds of the clan. But what was confusing was that no one seemed to have any memory of telling any other clan anything. Everyone was innocent. Salina, Colby and I were baffled. None of us could come up with any reason for this.
After a few days of this, I get a note from the Regime. I stare at the white envelope with a red wax seal of the Regime's emblem. I open the envelope and pull out the letter, unfolding it. It was short but the meaning was clear. The Regime required Colby and I's presence as soon as possible.
When I summoned Colby and Salina to my room, I told them about the letter. I instructed Salina to act as leader while Colby and I were gone. I told her to continue searching for the Indian's name, too. Shortly after, Colby and I parted and left to the Regime castle in Britain. During our trip, we had to stop a few times to feed. Early the next day, we made it to Britain. I led him to the Regime castle.
We stopped in front of the castle, looking up at the many towers and turrets. We stepped closer and as we did, the front double doors swung open with a creak. Squaring my shoulders, I took Colby's larger hand and walked inside, the doors creaking shut behind us.
All along the stone walls were vampires standing guard, each wearing a dark red cloak and watching us with keen interest. While Colby looked around curiously, I pulled him along the halls, stopping in front of another set of double doors.
"Enter." A deep voice rang out, and the doors opened.
