Penny and I didn't talk about our argument. Every time it was brought up or mentioned, never by me, she would suddenly remember something she needed to do, leave and not return until the next day. Sam and Brennen had taken to trying to convince me not to become like her, but I just argued with them or left the room every time.
I had already made up my mind. I wanted to be with Penny, even if it meant I had to drink blood to live. I wanted to be around her, without her worrying that she would accidentally hurt me. I wanted to be with her. I wanted to be a part of her world.
I asked Salina about her opinion on the argument, but all she said was that Penny was pretty stubborn, and rooted to her side of the argument. Salina also said she could see why I wanted to die and be reborn, but she said she would do it, only Penny had told her not to.
So life went on. I never brought it up, though I never forgot about it. The next time I went to the mansion, there was double the amount of vampires there, and Penny growled at every single new vampire that sniffed hopefully in my direction. Even Salina told them off. I told Penny not to worry about it so much, but she just shrugged.
"You don't know them." She had said. "How do you know they won't attack you as soon as you leave my sight?"
I didn't answer her. I didn't have an answer. She was right though. I didn't know the new vampires that watched me hungrily. I even heard Salina tell one of the new ones that I wasn't a blood bag.
From what I heard from Salina, Micheal had been causing quite some trouble in the clan. Not only did Penny have to deal with him, she now had to deal with the other clans testing her territory. Many times, her clan members caught other clan vampires in their territory, and it only made me worried. Micheal was getting closer.
"Penny?" I ask her one night. We were laying on my bed, my head on her shoulder and my arm over her waist as she lay on her back, her hand playing with my hair.
"Hmm?" She hums.
I pause, unsure how she was going to react. "Why do you not want to make a deal?"
Her hand stops, and she doesn't reply. After a second though, she quietly says, "You're human. You have a life." I open my mouth to argue, but she keeps going. "You have a choice. I didn't. I didn't get to choose this life. You do and you're choosing wrong."
"I'm choosing to be with you."
She sighs. "When you're as old as I am, you'll see which choice is right and wrong."
"Why is my choice wrong?"
"You have the choice of finding someone. Someone to marry. Someone to have kids with-"
"I don't want those if it's not with you." I say, lifting my head to look at her. "Vampires can't have kids? Fine, I don't want any."
"Colby-"
"I've made my choice. And my choice is you. I want you and only you. I don't want anyone else." I say. "And I want you to do it."
"Colby," She says, her voice filled with pleading. "Colby, I can't do it. I can't kill you."
"Then don't bite me. Just give me your blood-"
"No." She replies firmly. "Just, please, think about it. Please, Colby. Just think about it."
"Fine." I lay back down. "I'll think about it." Her hand moves to my hair again. "But if I still want to?"
She pauses. "Just think about it."
I tighten my arm over Penny, but it was like trying to get closer to stone. I shivered, and she reached around me and pulled my blanket over me. "You'll stay, won't you?" I ask her, yawning.
"I'll be here when you wake up." She whispers. "Now, go to sleep."
I smiled. I yawn again, and half asleep already, I mutter, "I love you."
