Colby took my advice and tried to feed without me being there, and he did pretty well. He was excited about it, which I thought was pretty amusing watching him run around after not killing any humans.
From what I knew, Tommo was able to get into the Dragons, but since then, I hadn't heard from him. I tried to remain positive and tell myself that there probably wasn't anything going on for him to report, but I constantly found myself wondering what happened.
It was only two weeks after that I finally got word from Tommo. He apologized for not reporting anything, but explained that the clan didn't trust him just yet to tell him anything. But he did report that he was working on it. So I let him.
"Colby, can you come here, please?" I ask to the empty room, knowing he can hear me. I then smile as he appears in front of me, grinning when he hugs me. "You really are enjoying this life, huh?"
"I have you with me, so I don't see any reason why I wouldn't be enjoying it." He replies. "Besides, it's so interesting now that I can hear everything." He laughs. "The other guys at the Trap House get annoyed with me when I reply to something they meant for me to not hear."
I shake my head. "You enjoy it, even though it's hard to remember that you can easily hurt them? You're still a newborn, Colby. You still have your human blood tissue, so you're stronger than me. Meaning it's easier to hurt them than it is for me."
He sighs. "I know." He says. "I just have to be careful. Especially with smell." He shakes his head, his red brown hair flying. "I still don't know how you could be around them all at the same time."
"It just takes time, and a bit of patience and practice." I reply. "Just remember, you've done better than me when you turned. So it's no surprise you could be around them."
"I only didn't kill anyone because you were there. You made sure I didn't kill those people."
"I know. I did that because I knew you'd never forgive yourself if you killed them."
"And you?"
I pause. "My creator wasn't there. He wasn't part of any clan, so he didn't care whether I lived or died, or whether I killed or not." I swallow. "If he meant for my turning, then he willingly let me kill so many innocent people." I look up at him. "I didn't want that for you, even if I wasn't the one who turned you."
"I never thanked you for it."
"No need to."
He scoffs. "Don't be humble." He tells me as I roll my eyes. "Thank you for keeping me from committing murder."
I laugh. "Don't say it like that."
"Thank you for keeping me from killing anyone." He corrects himself. "Better?"
"Much."
"So what did you want me for?"
I shrug. "Just wanted to hang out."
"Do vampires hang out?"
I pause, wondering if he was being serious. "I-yes-what?" I stutter, absolutely confused. "'Do vampires hang out'? What?"
Colby suddenly bursts out laughing. "I'm joking!"
"I thought you were being serious." I say. "Oh my god, Colby." I shake my head as he laughs.
"Well, to be honest, I don't know." He says, still laughing. "I'd think so, but I'm not sure. I'm not accustomed to vampire traditions."
I throw my hands up in the air. "That's it. I'm dating an idiot."
"Hey!" He whines.
"Yes, I'm dating an idiot, but I also don't blame you for not knowing." I say. "But vampires are still technically human, so yes, we hang out. The only difference in 'traditions' are that we don't celebrate our birthdays, or the day that our mothers gave birth to us. Other than that, they're really is no difference in human to vampire traditions."
He cocks his head to the side, giving me a quizzical look. "You don't celebrate birthdays?"
"No, we celebrate the day of our turning."
"So mine would have been seven weeks ago."
"Yes."
"When's yours?"
I grin. "Halloween."
