Penny leads me through the open doors, and the first things I think of when I see the next room is the Great Hall in the Harry Potter castle, Hogwarts. Except there wasn't four long tables, nor was the ceiling enchanted to match the sky outside. At the other side of the room, stood four chairs, raised up above everything else with stairs. On every side of the room, vampire guards watched.
I looked up at the four chairs, seeing them all occupied. Sitting in the far right chair was Maxime, hit white blond hair gleaming. None of the Regime moves, but continues to watch us as we walk closer. When we get about two feet from the bottom step of their chairs, we stop.
"Penelope." A dark haired Regime member greets her from the middle right. He smiles, then turns his brown eyes to me. "And this must be your One. Colby, isn't it? Wonderful, wonderful." His slow voice made me want to raise my eyebrow at him, but I resisted. I turn my head slightly to look at Penny, but she stared ahead determinedly. "Ah, Colby. Has your vampire mate not told you about us?" The dark haired vampire asks.
"I know somewhat." I reply. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Penny shoot me a warning.
"And what do you know?" Another asks from the far left. This one was also dark haired, but his skin was paler, making him look more like a skeleton with the dark circles under his eyes.
"I know that you're the oldest of all vampires. From the start of human creation. You have a mind power and you set the laws that protect vampires from extinction." I say.
The first Regime vampire gestures to Maxime. "You know Maxime, of course?"
I nod. "I do."
He gestures to the second vampire that had spoken, the other dark haired one. "This is Andreas." He points to the vampire sitting in the middle left seat. "This is Tiberius, and I'm Ramses."
"Enough with the meet and greet." Growled Tiberius, leaning forward. "How about we get down to business?"
"Yes, let's get this over with." Andreas agrees.
"Yes, right." Ramses says.
"You know why you're here?" Maxime asks, speaking for the first time. His question was directed to Penny.
"Yes, my Lord." She says, bowing her head.
"Then tell us. Why are you here?"
"I have attempted to keep important information from you."
"And this important information is...?" Maxime's voice trails off, waiting for Penny's answers.
"About my One."
Maxime turns to me. "And do you know what she is talking about?"
I copy Penny's actions and bow my head, repeating her words. "Yes, my Lord." The words felt strange as they rolled my tongue, and I did not like it.
"Then would you like to tell us?"
I pause. No, I didn't want to. "I'm Regime." I say.
There was silence. Then, "Prove it." It came from Tiberius.
I lift my head and hold out my hand. "I read somewhere that Regime members, who have the mind power, can't read others who have it too." Penny looks up, her hazel eyes wide as she stares at me.
Ramses stands and reaches out his hands, encasing mine. His green eyes hold mine, and though I felt nothing from him attempting to invade my mind. For some reason though, part of my mind was playing a kind of movie, kind of like it always did when I read someone's mind nowadays. Suddenly I realized, he couldn't see into my mind, but I could see into his.
Pulling that movie so I could see it, I watched as he stared at me, as if I was him, trying in vain to penetrate my mind. Through his eyes I watched the realization flicker in my eyes, but the thoughts floating thought his mind told me he hadn't noticed.
Ramses drops my hand, staring. "Impossible." His voice was quiet, almost as if he was talking to himself. Maybe he was.
"What did you see?" Tiberius asks.
"I saw... Nothing." Ramses answers.
Maxime leans forwards, frowning. "So it's true?"
I glance at Penny, who was watching me. I purse my lips, deciding to keep this new found discovery private. For the time being, of course.
Maxime stands and, as Ramses did, takes my hand. When he touched me, I could see his mind as clearly as I had Ramses. After a few seconds, he drops my hand. "How is this possible?"
"Please, my Lord," Penny says. "I had my deputy look into this as much as she could."
"And did she find anything?"
Penny pauses, then nods. "She found a prophecy."
