I lay Colby down on his bed, lean over him and plant a quick kiss on his forehead. Then I go downstairs and grab his phone, run back upstairs and plug it in to the wall, setting it on his bedside table. Then I run to the mansion, back to my clan. I make my way up to my room, then pause, wondering what I was going to do.
Then I move to my closet, throwing it open and pulling out the old Regime book. Holding it carefully, I walk to my bed and lay down, propped up against the headboard. I bring my legs up, resting the book on my thighs and letting it fall open. I flip to the index and run a finger down the list. It named everything from vampire laws to feeding to turning. Then I stop when I get to The One. I flip to the named page, and start reading.
I've read the passage so many times already that I had it memorized. But it was so hard to believe that it was true. That it wasn't just a legend. I kept reading it over and over, trying to find meaning behind the printed words to prove its reality to me.
Growing frustrated when I still couldn't find meaning in the passage, I flip to a different section, The Regime. I sigh, then drop my head and rub my eyes. I look out the window to see a faint pink glow on the horizon, signalling sunrise. Closing the book, I set it on my bedside table and lay down. The mansion was silent, letting me know that everyone else was either just being quiet or they were out.
It was around mid day when I woke up. I sit up and push my messy black hair out of my face and look around. I reach over and grab my phone, turning it on to see a text from Colby.
~Good morning, or afternoon. I don't know when you're going to sleep or waking up.~ The message read.
I smile and text him back. ~Just woke up.~ I set my phone down and clean myself up. I get dressed in simple boot cut jeans, white tee shirt and black leather jacket, and I brush my hair. I grab my phone, stuffing it in my back pocket before walking out.
"Salina, Derrick and Jack." I call out. All three vampires appear before me. "You two come with me to the blood bank." I say, pointing to the two male vampires. "Salina, you stay and watch over." She nods.
I turn to the door, Derrick and Jack behind me. We run to the blood bank and stop outside. It was too early for most people to be working at the blood bank, but there was security. My eyes scan the place from the shadows of the building across the street, looking for an easy way in. Then I sigh.
"We could run past them into the vault." Derrick suggests.
I nod. "Seems like the only thing we can do." I watch until the guards by the door walk just out of the way. "Let's go." We run past the guards, into the bank and down the halls, stopping in front of the vault door that led to all the donated blood. The three of us work together to pull open the metal security door, before dashing in and grabbing as much as we can. Then we run out, just managing to close the door and run out before anyone noticed anything. I stop and turn back to look at the building. Then I smile in amusement when I see one of the guards looking around, looking confused. We get back to the mansion and put the bags into the the fridge.
"How'd it go?" Salina asks, when I'm done, suddenly appearing in the room.
"Good. The guard at the front looked a little confused though."
Salina laughs as we start walking upstairs. "You know, ever since you met Colby, you've been happier."
"I have not." I reply, knowing full well she was right.
"It's true though. You've laughed and smiled more since meeting him."
