"The Trap House? Why?" I ask.
Penny shrugs. "I don't know. I really don't." She closes her eyes, dropping her head back. "Why does it seem like everyone is against us?"
"We just have to make sure to watch over them. Like we did with Colby when Micheal was alive." Salina suggests.
Penny lifts her head, gesturing towards me. "And how did that turn out?"
"Colby survived, Penny." Salina replies coolly. "He can defend himself now. Maybe the others would like to defend themselves. Especially against vampires."
"So you're suggesting they turn too?"
"I know for a fact that Sam wouldn't like that." I mutter.
"They should know their options, right. They should at least think about." Salina says.
Penny shakes her head. "We're not doing that." She takes the paper from Salina. "We won't do anything until we know for a fact they're in danger." I open my mouth to reply, but she holds up a hand, stopping me. "Trust me, Colby."
I stare, feeling my anger rise. "Then I'll watch them." I say.
She sighs. "Fine."
When the sun rose, I set out to the Trap House. I ran inside and stopped in the kitchen. I looked around, and seeing no one there, I sit down and listen to everyone's slow, deep breathing. I was only there for a half hour before I heard someone get up and walk to the bathroom. I sat still, staring at the doorway, waiting and listening as they walked down the hallways, down the stairs. I grin when Sam enters the room.
He stops, staring. "Colby?" He asks, rubbing his eyes. "What are you doing here?"
"I thought you wanted to know something." I say.
"Know what?" Sam moves to sit in the chair opposite me. "Has something happened?"
"Not really." I reply, leaning in. "A few weeks ago, Penny sent in someone to spy on our rival clan. They're disguised as being banished from my clan. At first nothing was happening, but last night we got a report back saying that our rival clan might be planning to attack you."
"Attack me?"
"Attack the Trap House. You and everyone here."
"Why?"
"We don't know. We're trying to find that out." I say. Sam leans back, staring at the table. "Salina reckons that you guys should think about-" I stop, not wanting him to know, but I felt I had to. "About turning."
Sam looks up. "Turning? Like, being a vampire?"
I nod. "Yes. She wants you guys to think about it."
"If we do decide to turn, we'd have to leave behind our fans. We'd have to leave behind our family." Sam says. "Our fans are already wondering why you've been looking so sick the past two months. What about in twenty years, when we're supposed to look much older? We'll still look the same."
"I know." I reply. "It's just something to think about. If you turn, you'd be able to protect yourself. More than you are now."
Sam nods. "I'll think about it. And I'll let the others know."
I point to the ceiling. "No need to." I say. "I hear at least three others coming down right now."
Sure enough, three others came down. Devyn, Kat and Jake. Like Sam, they all wondered what I was doing here. And like with Sam, I told them the same thing I told Sam.
"She wants us to turn?" Devyn asks, her hand over her mouth.
"She wants you to think about it." I answer. "The decision is completely up to you, but if I'm going to put my opinion out there, I think she has a point."
Jake nods. "Yeah, we could easily defend ourselves."
"What does Penelope think?" Kat asks.
I pause. "She says no. She doesn't want to watch over the Trap House until they're sure you guys are in danger."
"She says no?"
"With the extra border patrols and blood runs, we don't have many vampires to watch." I say. "I'm doing it because you guys are my family. Brennen too."
Jake laughs. "I'm down to turn."
I scowl. "Just letting you know, it's not what you'd think."
