Part 8

I don't move. Instead, I just stand there, watching James turn and leave to his room. The others follow suit, vanishing into other parts of the mansion. I growl when I hear Micheal mutter, "Maybe the human boy can be another blood bag for us."
"Penelope." Salina appears at my arm, tugging me upstairs. She leads me to her room and sits me on the bed. "You didn't know."
"What?" I ask.
"You didn't know he was your One."
I shake my head. "There's no possible way to tell."
"But the book-" Salina starts, but I cut her off.
"Fuck the book!" I snap. "That book has got you messed up. Believing in things that aren't real."
"Then explain the Scented One. Explain us. Vampires aren't supposed to be real, yet here we are. Werewolves aren't supposed to be real, yet they roam all over Europe. Dragons weren't supposed to be real, yet the Regime remembers when they were still alive."
I turn away, but don't reply. The legend of the One, it was just a legend. It had to be. "It's just a legend."
Salina purses her lips. "You growled at Micheal for what he said. About Colby?"
"So?"
Salina puts her hands up. "You might not believe it, but the proofs there."
I scowl at her, then reach out and take the Regime Vampire Legends book. I set it on my lap and look at the old, worn out, yellowish-brown cover with gold, peeling letters.
"You're second in command. You should read it."
I nod, then stand up, walking out of her room with the book in my hand. When I get to my own room, I fall onto the bed, kicking my shoes off and laying down on my back, crossing my ankles with my back on the headboard.
I open the cover and end up staying up all night reading the whole book. I read everything from the Scented One to the One to the vampire anatomy. Everything from legends to fact. The book had it all. By the time I finished reading it, cover to cover, the sun had already risen. I stare out the window.
Could it all be true? I knew Colby was my Scented One, but could he possibly be my One?
