Colby lay on the ground, surrounded by bits of mirror that I had pushed him into, and covered in blood, with his eyes closed. Sam was kneeling beside him, violently shaking him.
"Colby, wake up. Say something, please!" Sam begged him, but Colby doesn't move.
I rush over. I look him over, but as far as I could tell, he wasn't hurt badly. Then I see his neck. "He was bitten." I say quietly.
Sam looks up. "What?"
"He was bitten. He's changing." I say, feeling my panic rise. I lick my lips. Then I push Colby ove onto his back, and pick him up. "You guys stay here. Do not leave the house. I will send money for the wall. Do not leave." I tell the others.
"What about Colby?" Corey asks.
I look down at him, debating on telling the others. Fuck it. "He was bitten." I move to the door, before turning back. "Don't leave the house, and don't contact Colby. If you need to contact him, text or call me. And burn the body." Then I run. I run back to the mansion and into my room. I set Colby down onto my bed, the rush out the door. "Salina!" I yell.
Salina appears in front of me. "What do you-why are covered in blood?"
I grab her arm and pull her into the room. I close the door and turn to her. "Micheal came."
"What?" Her eyes widened.
"He came and attacked Colby. He's bitten."
Salina turns to Colby. "And what about Micheal?"
"I killed him." I was breathing heavily, unable to stop. "Salina, he bit Colby. He's dying." I felt tears prick my eyes and I squeezed them shut. Salina takes me into her arms, holding me tightly.
"He'll be fine, Penny. I promise."
I shake my head. "He's dying, Sal."
She pulls away and grabs my arms. "Penny, look at me. Colby will be fine. His human part of him is dying. He'll be fine. He'll wake up."
"He won't be the same." I cry. I don't remember ever crying in my vampire life. Weird. "He won't be the same. I'll never see him blush or hear his heart."
"Penny, he'll be fine." She says. "Just don't hurt yourself. Okay?" She moves me to the chair by my desk and sits me down. "Just calm down."
It was a while before I was able to get a grip on myself. Finally though, after what seemed like hours, I stopped crying and just stared at the floor in front of me. My phone was blowing up, but I had no motivation to answer any of the texts or calls. All I could do was think about how much this hurt. Salina told me that Colby would be fine, but it still hurt. It felt like a huge piece of me had been ripped away, leaving me empty and numb.
Was this what Micheal had felt? This empty, numb feeling? As if he'd never be happy?
"Just think, Penny. At least the sex will be better." Salina says. I glare up at her. "Oh, come on. You know he'll wake up eventually. He'll just be... different."
"Exactly." I mutter. "Different."
"Look." She says. I do. I lift my head and look at what she was pointing at. I stand up and move to my bed, not moving my eyes away.
Colby hadn't moved, but there were definite changes. His skin was slightly paler, but still tan. His eyes had a shadow underneath, like he hadn't slept well in weeks. His face still had his usual boyish look, but somehow different.
I listened for his heartbeat, and sighed when I heard it, but it was failing. It was uneven. Choppy. Straining to fight off the venom that was changing him. It would fail. It always did. I stood there, watching him, listening as his heart slowly beat into nothing.
I take a breath when it stops, and I lean against Salina as we both watch, waiting.
