Colby turns to me as Salina leaves. "You never told me they could do that." He says, anger in his voice.
"I didn't think it was something you would've wanted to know, Colby. Calm down." I reply. I turn to face him, then reach out and push him towards the bed, my hands on his chest. I sit him down.
"What exactly did he do?" He asks.
"They can see into your mind. Change things if they want to. I've only heard of one case of them changing a vampire's mind. They mostly just look to see if someone is telling the truth." I explain. "That's what he did to me. He just looked into my mind to see exactly what happened."
"He could've done that to me." He replies, sounding protective.
"No, he couldn't have."
"Why not?"
"Because you were human when it happened. The brain of a human isn't a sharp as a vampire's. If he looked into your mind, it'd be like trying to watch a play with the curtains closed. He wouldn't be able to tell if what happened was true." I explain.
"Come to think of it, I barely remember it. It's foggy."
"Exactly."
"Is he the only one who can do that?" Colby asks. "Is that why he came?"
I shake my head. "Vampire's can have that power. But it's so ancient and rare that only Regime members have it." I say. "It's what helps them decided if a vampire is innocent or guilty of a crime."
"What do they do if they think someone if guilty?"
"they look into their mind. If they find that the vampire is really guilty, they decide of a punishment. Depending on what that vampire in question did, the punishments can range from a warning to torture to death."
"What would your punishment be if you willingly bit me without their permission?"
"I didn't bite you."
"Hypothetically."
"Torture, if I'm lucky."
"If you're lucky?"
"Yes. If I'm lucky, they won't kill me." I say. "Hypothetically, of course."
"Damn, they sound cruel."
"Their laws and punishments are in place to keep us vampires safe, Colby. If we didn't have those laws and punishments, we'd die out. Humans are scared of us, and they'd kill us if they knew of us."
"We didn't kill you." He says. "Before I turned, I mean."
"That's because you couldn't kill me. You were my One. You would've killed yourself is you killed me. And you helped Sam and the others see that I wasn't dangerous." I sit beside him, and lean to the side, resting my head on his shoulder. Colby turns his head and presses his lips to my forehead. I smile, taking his larger hand in mine. "Thank you." I say.
"For what?" He asks quietly.
"For believing in me. For being by my side." I giggle. "For making me try hot chocolate."
He chuckles. "What else was I going to do? Let you miss out on something so good?"
I laugh. "It was good."
"You know what I haven't done? I haven't tried eating human food yet."
I raise an eyebrow. "It doesn't taste the same, but if you want to, go ahead." I wave towards the door.
He shakes his head. "No place will be open at this time of night." He says. "We can go tomorrow."
"We?"
"Yeah, you're coming with me."
"And who says that?" I ask, crossing my arms.
"Me."
"And who's going to enforce that?"
"Me."
"Oh yeah?"
He growls playfully, and grabs me, pushing me back against the blankets. He holds my hands above my head, holding tightly so I couldn't break free. For the millionth time since his turning, I wished he wasn't stronger than me. But I stop thinking about it when he kisses my neck. In fact I stop thinking all together. All that went through my mind was that this was the first time he's ever done anything like this, and how good his lips felt on my skin.
