When I get back to the mansion, I am met with a crowd of vampires surrounding James and another vampire, Dave, being held down on his knees by two other vampires, Micheal and Colin. I scowl and push through to the front. Vampires were calling out names and insults, spitting and hissing at Dave. I catch James's eye and he beckons me over.
"What'd he do?" I mutter quietly. The vampires around us were so occupied by insulting Dave that I doubt anyone cared what we were talking about.
"He willingly gave information to the Dragons about our clan." James explains. "Met up with their leader last night." I turn and look at Dave, only to find he was already watching me. The look in his eyes wasn't kind. "I want you to deal with him."
I frown. Me? Why did he want me to deal with the traitor? Only leaders did that. "Why me?"
"You're second in command. Prove you're fit to be leader."
I nod. I turn to see Dave drop his head, closing his eyes. I circle around him and point to him, my gaze on my fellow clan members. "This traitor has given our rival clans information about the Blood Serpents. Explain."
Dave looks up and glares at me. "You and James aren't fit for leadership in this clan." He says. "The Dragons are!" His words were met by shouts of disagreement and jeering.
I move to stand behind him. Micheal and Colin hold his arms, pulling so that he couldn't move. Dave knew what was going to happen. Instead of hanging his head, he just held his head high. I place my hands on the sides of his head, and with a sudden thrust to the side, I tore his head off. Cheers went up.
I held his torn off head high in the air. "This is what happens to anyone who betrays us!" I yell.
The next day, I travel back to the area, and walk around the streets aimlessly, hoping to find Colby. I walk for hours, and I'm about to give up when I see his red-brown walk into a restaurant. I wait, debating if I should follow him.
"Fuck it." I breathe out.
I follow, entering the restaurant. I look around when I walk in. Colby, who had found a table at the back, looked up. He frowned as he stared. I walk up to him. Colby raises his eyebrows.
"Hello." I say, when I reach him.
He pauses. "Hi."
"I noticed you seemed like you wanted to talk to me yesterday." I say. "In the bar?"
"Yeah. I wanted to introduce myself." Colby says. "Do you want to... sit down?"
I give him a smile and sit down. Then I reach my hand over. "Penelope Larwun." I say, shaking his hand.
"Colby Brock." He says. "Now that I think about it, I want to apologize for my friend's words."
I shake my head. "No need. On the contrary, I'm quite flattered."
"You are?" He asks. I nod. "Can I ask you something?"
I raise an eyebrow. "What is it?"
He leans in, resting his elbows on the table. "Something happened last night. And I don't know if it was a dream or not. But it felt pretty real."
"What happened?"
"I was talking to one of my friends and when he left, I went outside to get some air." He pauses, licking his lips. "I saw you."
I stare. "You saw me."
"Yeah. You were on the balcony outside my apartment with me." He pauses again, looking down at his hands. "You kissed me."
I lean forward. "Well, I can tell you one thing." He looks up. "I was at home all night. So you either fell asleep without remembering going to bed and were dreaming, or you were just so tired you were imagining things."
He looks down. "Yeah, you're probably right."
Colby and I talk for hours, and at the end, we exchange numbers. And as the days go by, Colby gets more comfortable around me. And the more I hung out with him and got to know him, the more I wanted him to know about me.
When I voiced these thoughts to Salina, she warned me against it.
"Do you realize what you will be doing, not only to you and this clan, but to vampires all over the world? It'll be just like the witch burnings in the 1400's." She told me.
"Colby can keep a secret." I defended him.
"You don't know that. You've only known him for three weeks."
"He's going to find out sooner or later. And if he does, I'll make him keep it a secret, or I'll threaten to kill him."
"Don't tell him."
I sigh. "Fine." I say. "But if he finds out on his own, I'm not stopping him."
