"Are you alright?" Salina asks Colby.
He giggles. "Alright, yeah."
"You should probably sleep this off."
"I don't wanna sleep. 'M not tired."
"Lay down at least?" I ask him sweetly.
"Fiiiiine." He draws out. I slide out from under him, and as I stand up, I look back at him. He was slouched back on the couch, his eyes closed and a small grin on his face like he was thinking of something funny.
"How do you feel?" Salina asks me.
I look down at myself. "I feel... strong."
"After all those blood bags? I bet."
Suddenly there's a knock on the door and it opens to reveal Sam. He looks in and freezes when he sees me, blood covering my lips. Then his eyes trail to Colby, laying on the couch. "Is Colby-" He starts but I cut him off.
"He's fine."
Salina nods. "He's just a little high."
"High?"
"Vampire venom is like a drug." I state. Then I turn to Salina. "You should go back. I'm going to stay here." Salina nods and disappears.
Sam blinks. "Where'd she go?"
"Back to my clan." I gesture to the couch. "Would you like to sit? I'm going to put him in bed." Sam nods, moving to sit down on the couch as I pick up Colby and carry him to his bed. When I get back, Sam was watching me curiously. I sit down. "You don't trust me." I say.
"It's not like that." He says. "I do trust you. This is all just new to me. I mean, vampires?"
"We're pretty difficult to spot. Almost impossible."
"I mean, there must be some truth behind all the myths of mystical creatures, right?"
"There's truth behind everything if-" I'm cut off when the door is thrown open. I turn to see Salina, looking rather worried. "Salina, what-"
"Micheal." She gasps. "I heard him talking to James."
"About?"
"About Colby."
I rush over to her, grabbing her arms. "What was he saying? Salina, what was he saying?"
"He told James that Colby needed to be dealt with or you needed to step down. I ran out before I could hear James's reply. I almost got caught."
"Wait, what?" Sam stands up. "Colby's in danger?"
I look at Sam, then back to Salina. "Salina, you stay here. Do not leave Colby alone." Then I run. I run out of the apartment complex, all the way to the mansion on the other side of LA. When I get to the mansion, I see Turner, another vampire who was three hundred years younger than me. "Where's Micheal?" I ask him darkly.
"Up with James." I turn and sprint up to the third floor, down the hall to James's master bedroom. I burst through the closed door, barreling into Micheal and pinning him to the wall, my arm pressed into his throat. He looked alarmed at my sudden assault, but his evil eyes stayed the same.
"Penelope!" I hear James call out, surprised.
"You leave him alone or I swear on the lives of the Regime, I will kill you." I threaten, my voice low and dangerous.
"Penelope, stand down." James says calmly.
"Stand down, little Penny." Micheal taunts.
I let him down, my body filled with anger. I turn to James. "He has no right to threaten him or me."
James holds up a hand. "Micheal was merely letting me know that you've been slacking."
"Slacking? I've done more than his lazy ass has ever done."
"You've been spending too much time with that human boy. Either you leave him alone and never talk to him again, or you step down." James tells me. "You can't have both."
"And why not?"
"You don't put your clan first where he's involved."
"I'm not stepping down." I tell him, stepping closer. "And I will not leave him alone."
Micheal claps his hands. "Looks like we're getting a new second in command and a new blood bag." He looks at both of us excitedly. I growl.
"I'm not doing either."
"Penelope, I don't want to lose you. You're too valuable to this clan."
"Then I'll be leader."
Both vampires pause. Then Micheal steps forward, pointing at me. "You-"
"Stop!" All three of us turn. Salina stood in the doorway.
"I thought I told you to stay." I snap at her.
"Guess I'll go get him then." Micheal says. He didn't have any time to move towards the door as I suddenly launched myself at him, grabbing him by the head and throwing him to the other side of the room, where he lands with a sickening crunch.
