"Is that bad?" Colby asks. "That I mean a lot?"
"With the situation going on now, yes." I say, turning to him. "But away from that, no. I'd want to take you as mine."
Colby looks up. "Take me as yours?"
"Mark you." I say. "Make it so that no other vampire can hurt you."
"How do you mark me?"
"It's a bit complicated. We'd both have to... hurt ourselves. But it would only work if both of us are one hundred percent willing to do it."
"I'm willing." He says immediately. I sensed the hope in his voice.
"We'd have to cut ourselves, Colby. Share blood." I say quietly.
He frowns, wrinkling his nose. "I'd have to drink your blood? But what if I die before twenty four hours?"
I laugh. "No, you're not drinking my blood. Drinking my blood will change you if you die, but you won't be doing that."
"Then what?"
"I'd have to put my blood in yours."
He pauses. "How?"
"Cutting both of our arms. I'd be able to mix my blood into yours. When I do that, other vampires will be able to smell that your blood is different. They'd smell me in you. They'll be able to smell that I had marked you." I explain. "Then they can't harm you."
"But you said that one vampire is after me." Colby says. "Won't he just not care?"
"There's a chance." I say. "But I know Micheal well enough. He won't want to break one of the Regime's laws."
"That's a law? Not being able to kill a marked human?"
"Yes." I answer. "Micheal won't want the Regime after him."
"But he's rogue, isn't he?"
"Rogue or clan, every vampire is under Regime control."
Colby closes his eyes and leans forward, pressing his hands into his eyes and groaning. "Vampires are complicated." He says quietly. He didn't mean for me to hear, but thanks to my super hearing, I heard him clearly.
I laugh, shaking my head. "You'll get used to our way of life if you stay around long enough."
He looks up, frowning. "You heard that?"
I tap my ear. "Vampire, remember?"
He shakes his head. "Damn super senses." Then he sits up. "I'm willing to be marked though."
I stare. "You don't realize that it would hurt."
"How would it hurt?"
"I told you before. I'm dangerous. Everything is meant for death. Even my blood." I say. "You have enough in your system, it'll make you too weak to do anything. If I were to mark you, you'd be in a lot of pain."
"I'm guessing I'd be in even more pain if Micheal got to me." He says quietly, looking down.
I open my mouth to reply, then close it, realizing he was probably right. Then I think of something. "If I'm going to mark you, I want something in return."
He looks up. "What do you want?" He asks skeptically.
I lean close to him, so that my lips were an inch from his. "Be mine."
He frowns, confusion in his ocean blue eyes. "I already said I want to be marked."
"Not marked." I say.
"Are you asking me out?"
"Yes."
He smiles. "I've been wanting to date you for a long time."
Then he leans in and kisses me, and I had to stop breathing because he smelled so damn good. My dead heart was fluttering and my stomach was filled with butterflies. God, it's been centuries since I felt this way about anything, or anyone. Then I pull away, only to move my lips to his neck. I kiss his skin, hearing his heart beat faster. Then I stop.
"Are you sure you want to be marked?" I ask.
"I'm sure." He replies.
I nod. Then I stand up and move to the desk where the map of Los Angeles was. I open the drawer and pull out a small silver dagger. It wasn't needed, because we're all vampires, but I kept it just in case. I walk back to the bed, standing in front of Colby, and hold it out to him.
