Penelope looks at me. "Does Colby know about it?" Sam asks.
"Yes." She nods.
Sam shakes his head. "What is it?"
"Tell me. Do you honestly believe in ghosts and spirits?" Penelope leans in, her hazel eyes darker than usual. She was hungry.
"Yes, I do."
"What about... vampires and werewolves? Dragons, maybe?"
"I think it could be true, but I don't know."
"What if I told you they were real?"
Sam pauses. "For real?" Penelope leans back. "I'd say, 'Show me some proof'."
Penelope grins, then disappears, only to appear behind Sam. He yelps, turning around so fast he falls off and onto the floor. He was staring at Penelope. "How-but you-you were there-now you're-how?" He stuttered. "What are you?"
"She's a vampire." I say.
"Aren't vampires supposed to be evil?"
"If she was, don't you think she would have killed us already?" I reason.
"So you actually drink blood?" Sam asks Penelope, looking terrified.
"I do." She replies. Sam looks at me, his eyes wide. "I haven't fed from Colby, if that's what you're thinking."
"Colby, why didn't you say anything?"
"It wasn't my secret to tell." I answer him.
Sam swallows. He seemed too scared to move. "So is everything we know about vampires true?"
"No."
"Like what?"
"Well, garlic doesn't repel us. We actually like it when humans eat foods with garlic because we can almost taste it in their blood."
"What about anything religious?"
"Nope." She shakes her head. "I was Christian before I was turned."
"What about the sun? I've seen you in the sun. You don't burn or sparkle or anything."
"Damn Twilight." Penelope mutters. "The sun doesn't affect us in the way you would think. All it does, if we're in the sunlight long enough, it drains us. It makes us tired and... thirsty."
"Is that why you were asleep when I texted you?"
"Yes. I was in the sunlight at Colby's yesterday and it drained me."
"You didn't feed though." I say. "I can tell."
"You can tell?" Sam scoots a little farther away. "How?"
"Her eyes. They're usually just hazel, but they get darker the hungrier she gets." I explain. "Her eyes are dark right now, so I can tell she hasn't fed."
"Should I be worried?"
"You're not the one who should be worried." Penelope replies.
"What do you mean?" Sam asks. I didn't even know the answer
"If my control on my hunger were to slip, the person I would go after is Colby."
"Why's that?"
Penelope opens her mouth to reply, but before she could utter a sound, the front door burst open. "God, I hate James right now. Penelope!" All three of us look up. Another girl comes around the corner, looks up, then freezes, sniffing the air. Her hazel eyes, very much like Penelope's, looked from my face, to Sam's, then to Penelope. "You brought humans?" She asked.
Penelope growls, a sound deep in her throat that scared me. "Not food." She says quietly.
The new vampire, who looked remarkably like Penelope, steps closer. They had to be related. "Shame. I haven't eaten."
"Go hunt then." Penelope replies.
"No, who are these?"
"This is Sam and Colby."
The girl's eyes flick to her. "The Scented One?"
"Yes."
"I'm sorry, what's going on?" Sam asks. The two girls look back at us.
"This is Salina." Penelope introduces the other girl. "We're best friends."
"That one was probably thinking we're related." Salina points to me.
"I wouldn't blame Colby. We do look incredibly like alike, even if our personalities are completely different."
Saalina raises her eyebrows at me. "So this is Colby. I was wondering when I would meet you."
"What?" I ask, glancing at Sam. He looked just as confused as I felt.
Salina turns to Penelope. "I left a little snack at the mansion for you."
"A person?" Sam asked, his blue eyes wide.
"No." Penelope answers. "I feed off blood bags. I haven't been able to feed fresh off humans for almost two months now."
"Why's that?" I ask.
Salina glances at Penelope. "Reasons." Penelope answers.
I glance at Sam. I was almost positive there was something she wasn't telling me.
