When I woke, I was in my room, laying on my back on my bed. I groan at the sudden pounding in my head, and I sit up, my hand to my temple. A small, cool hand pushed me back down and Penny held out two white pills and a water bottle. I gratefully take the pills, swallowing them without water before drinking the water.
"You chose a very... inconvenient time to do an outside prank." She says quietly, watching me as I put the cap back on the bottle.
"Why?"
"Brennen walked in."
I sit up. "What? Walked in when?"
She doesn't answer. Instead, she says, "He's downstairs talking to Sam and Corey."
I throw the blankets off me. "I've got to talk to him."
I make to stand up, but Penny stops me, pushing me back down onto the bed, holding me down to keep me from getting up. "You need to rest."
"I can rest later, I need to talk to him." I reply, hopelessly trying to pull myself free.
She pauses, but doesn't release me. Then she says, "Stay here." She disappears, but was back in less than a second, poking her head through the door. "I mean it. Stay there." Then she's gone. I sit up, suddenly wishing I could hear as well as she could. Wishing I was as strong as her.
Penny comes back a minute later, followed by Sam and Brennen. I jump up when Brennen comes in, but it didn't last long as Penny pushes me down again. I huff, blowing a few hairs out of my eyes.
"Damn, they weren't lying." Brennen says, looking me up and down. "You do look sick."
"I feel fine." I reply. "When did you walk in?"
"When she was drinking from you." Brennen nods towards Penny.
"Had quite a shock." Sam laughs.
"It's not every day you walk into your friend's house to find him looking like he's dead with some girl drinking his blood." Brennen retorts, frowning. Next to me, I hear Penny growl quietly. I reach out and take her small hand in mine. She quiets down, but was still watching Brennen.
"Brennen." I warn quietly. He glances at Penny, and I wasn't surprised when I saw a little fear flash through his green eyes. "I was fine. It doesn't hurt, and I wanted it."
Brennen looks around nervously, then sits down. "How come you didn't tell me?"
I shrug. "It wasn't my secret to tell. Besides, humans aren't supposed to know about vampires."
He chuckles. "So that's why we thought she was good looking."
"Huh?"
"In that one place. Where we first saw each other." Penny says. "At least now you know why I looked 'hungry' when I first saw you."
I frown. "That was so long ago. I don't remember saying you looked hungry."
"Vampires have sharper minds. We remember things more clearly." She explains. "And I clearly remember you telling Brennen that I looked curious, then 'hungry'." She smiles. "When you didn't know I could hear you quite plainly." Then she cocks her head to the side. "Brennen thought I wanted a piece of you."
"Yeah, blood." I say.
I look back at Brennen, who was watching Penny and I closely. "To think that when Colby finally isn't single, he dates a vampire."
I groan and grab my pillow, hitting him with it. "Shut up."
"He has a point, Colby." Sam says. "However funny it may be."
"Not you too." I bury my face into my pillow, now held close to my chest.
"Think about it. You haven't dated in years. Then when you finally decided to ask someone out, you ask out a vampire." Sam turns to Penny, holding his hands up. "No offence meant."
"None taken." She says. "You two aren't the only ones who finds it amusing."
I lift my head from the pillow. "Oh, come on!" I exclaimed. She shrugs. "Are you all done talking about my love life?"
"Okay, okay, I have a question?" Brennen says. "What does it feel like? Being fed from?"
Sam looks at me curiously. I frown, glancing at Penny for some help, but she just watched me. Maybe everyone experiences it differently. "It's kind of hard to explain." I say, scratching the back of head. "I can't really think of a word for it, but the closest I guess would be heaven. Like, it hurts for a second, but then it's like-it's like I'm floating." I look up at my friends. "I don't really know how to explain it."
"Do you know what it feels like?"Brennen asks Penny.
She shakes her head. "I was never fed from." Brennen frowns. "I was bitten and left to die. I didn't know what was happening or what I was, but I knew I wasn't human. No human can possibly feel the hunger of a vampire."
"What's it like?" I ask.
"When someone first turns, they're so blood thirsty, they'd kill for blood and not think twice about it. Even if it was their own friends or family they were killing."
