Everyone's eyes turn to Colby. "You can read minds?" Jake asks, breaking the silence.
"The Regime can see into minds, but only with physical contact." I say. "Colby doesn't need that."
"That's awesome!" Jake exclaims. "So you can just look at someone and read their thoughts?"
"Kind of." Colby says.
"How long has this been going on?" Corey asks.
"A few weeks."
"How did you find out?" Tara asks. "Like how did it first happen?"
"Right now isn't the time for these questions." I say. "There's something else they wanted."
"They know about you." I say. "The Regime. They know that you know about us vampires. They think you know too much. They told us-they gave us a choice."
"What choice?" Sam asks.
"They told us to either turn you, or kill you." I say.
"Like turn us into vampires?" Devyn asks.
I nod. Everyone was looking at each other, unsure of what to say or do.
Then Sam speaks up. "Can we have time to think about it?"
"They didn't give us a deadline, but knowing them, they want it soon." I say. "Think about it. But come to a decision soon." I stand up, Colby following suit. "We don't want to kill you."
"You already know my answer, brother." Jake says. He stands up and pats Colby on the shoulder. "I don't want to die, and I've always thought that being a vampire would be kind of cool."
"Jake," Tara says, her voice quiet. "Just think about it, please?"
"I've already made up my mind." He gently tells her. Then he turns to me. "I'll turn."
"Alright." I say, licking my lips. "I'll let you have today. Tomorrow, be ready." I look down at Tara, who was staring at Jake with tears in her eyes. "Don't worry, Tara. He'll be safe." I turn to the others. "Think about it."
Colby and I make it back to the mansion, and we spend the day sleeping. The next day, around dusk, I set out to the Trap House. After a few minutes of goodbyes, Jake departs with me. We take his car to the mansion, me directing him. We get there, and I warn the other vampires to not touch him. I lead him to a spare room, and after a quick argument, I reluctantly let Colby stay with him.
"Are you ready?" I ask Jake as he lays down, like I instructed.
He nods. "Yeah."
I look up to Colby and Salina. "I need you both to help me when he wakes up, okay?" They nods, Colby bites his lip as he looks down at Jake.
"Think of it this way, brother. You don't have to be so careful with me anymore." Jake says, turning his head to Colby.
Colby manages a small unamused smile. "I guess, yeah."
"Now, relax, Jake." I say, and he closes his eyes. I lean down and bite him, pulling away quickly. We listen as his heart stops a few seconds after. It was very different from Colby's turning. His body quickly starts changing, his skin becoming paler and his eyes darker.
"Colby, go get someone for him. Salina, help me hold him down." I say. Colby leaves the room, and Salina positions herself over Jake's arm. After a few minutes, he wakes up.
"Jake?" I ask quietly. "How do you feel?"
Jake blinks, his black eyes darting around the room the way Colby's did. "Hungry." He says.
Salina, Colby and I all work together to help Jake. We keep him from killing anyone, like I did with Colby, and then we work on his control. When I was satisfied that Jake wouldn't attack anyone, I went back to the Trap House and collected Tara, who volunteered to be turned next.
When Jake saw Tara at the mansion, he forced himself to stop breathing and Colby took him out of the room. Once she was turned, Jake came back and helped her.
I then set the task of working on control to Colby, and Salina and I worked together on getting each Trap House member. After Jake and Tara, Brennen went next, then Corey. Devyn went after him, then Kat, and last came Sam.
Colby argued with me about being with Sam when he was turned, and after realizing that I was fighting a losing battle against him, I agreed. Sam's turning went pretty smoothly, more so then the others. It was actually a little concerning how much control he seemed to already have. All of them, however, turned almost immediately, unlike Colby, so we knew they weren't like him. Why he was different, we didn't know, except for the prophecy.
Once the Trap House was turned, I sent word to the Regime, who were delighted that I followed their order, and responded saying that a member would come to check. It also became pretty apparent that Brennen seemed to enjoy his newfound strength, and constantly challenged Colby to wrestling matches. Salina and I found this very amusing, because every time, Brennen lost. Whether it was because Colby could see the moves Brennen would make before he made them, or because Colby's newborn strength didn't seem to be fading like every other newborn's strength was. Either way, Salina and I still found it hilarious every time Colby pinned down Brennen.
