I sat between Vince and Sandro while we ate. I glanced at Sophia but didn't speak to her. Jealousy swirled through me every time she touched him. She rested her hand on his leg under the table. I kept my eyes down but watched both her and the Russo's closely.
They we're discussing business I didn't care about. I tuned their voices out and was lost in my memories. I was lost in the time I'd spent with Franco when I ran away from Vince when I was seventeen. The boy sitting with Franco's youngest son, Vito smiled at me. He knew who I was, and despite losing my memory, I did remember him. I didn't include him or any of my time with Franco Jr. in my journals. This boy was my secret. A secret I'd shared with only Vito.
Franco had asked Vito if I could live with him temporarily after I'd explained that I ran away and was staying in a hotel. I knew I was going to have to find a job. I only agreed to stay with Vito so I wouldn't be homeless while I was trying to get on my feet. I took the first job I could find but kept looking for something better. I lived with Vito from the time I was seventeen and a half until I moved in with Enzo Montorini when I was 20. We got along pretty well and didn't ever have any arguments. Maybe it was because we were only seven months apart in age or because we had similar interests. Vito and I had become friends while I lived with him.
The boy was Noah Russo. He was Franco and I's son. I never told Franco that I was pregnant. We had a falling out before I got the chance. I didn't want to lose contact with the child after he was born but I knew I wouldn't be able to take care of him. Three months after I turned 19 and Noah was born, I let Vito Russo adopt his nephew. I'd made him promise me that he'd never tell anyone the boy was mine and his oldest brother's. The day I moved out of Vito's apartment was the last time I'd seen my son and Vito. He had kept my secret all this time.
After we finished eating the Dons of each family and their father's all went to Matteo's office to finish their discussion.
"Ryder can you get me more wine please." I asked not looking up from the table.
"I think you've had enough Ana." He replied.
I rolled my eyes letting out an annoyed sigh. I was hell bent on getting drunk so I did what anyone in my position would have done. I grabbed Vince's wine glass and Sandro's pouring them both in my empty glass filling it almost to the rim. Sophia gave me a a sideways look as smiled but didn't say anything to me.
The rest of the families had struck a conversation with one of Franco Sr.'s sons, Bernardo and Vito. I wasn't paying attention to the conversation but started listing somewhere in the middle of it.
"Are you kidding?" Dominic said.
"Yeah, Ana could kick your ass." Dimitri said.
"No way. No girl could kick my ass." Bernardo said.
"Well your underestimating our girl." Sergio said.
"Yeah. She's gonna put you on the floor and make you cry." Vito said to his brother.
"Prove it." Bernardo said.
"Ana, do you want to fight this loser?" Sergio asked me.
"Yeah, I need to hit something." I said finishing the wine in front of me.
We all walked into the ballroom. I wasn't ready for Bernardo to hit me as I turned to face him, but he swung and I caught his fist. I twisted his arm and threw him to the floor wrapping my legs around his neck. I let him lay there for a moment holding until I was ready to let go.
I released him and rolled to my feet. He stood and rushed at me. I brought my arm up with a closed fist as he neared. My fist struck his ear causing him to lean back slightly. He swung at me as he leaned forward again. I kicked him square in the chest. Pain radiated through my ankle. He stumbled back and rushed me again. We swung at the same time catching each other's fists and getting caught in a power struggle. After struggling against each other of a few minutes I took the approach any of my children would have, I bit his arm hard enough to draw blood. He let go and I spun him around, kicking his feet out from under him and dropping him to the floor. I stood on his back and twisted his arm around until it was almost ready to snap.
