Ash POV
Well here I am, back at school, in my usual place next to Bobby. Linda was sill in the lower form because she has to catch up from where she left off two years ago.
"Well it's a small price to pay I guess," said Linda. "Well I don't actually mind now because Ben is behind bars. Also, if it wasn't for this whole kidnapping thing, I wouldn't have met the Gardner family. They're great people."
She still keeps in touch with them. Although they didn't have an internet connection. At least they had landline.
Okay, back to me. I'm sitting here in class without that ridiculous disguise. It feels really good to just be who I am. But unfortunately, my classmates don't recognise me, even when I saw my full name, oh my gosh! I must've been a total nobody...
The English teacher came in and we all sat down after greeting her.
"Ash, Penelope, another good essay as always," she said giving our essay back to us. "It's good to see that you're out of your emo phase now, Ash."
I just smiled and everyone started staring at me in shock. Penelope started snickering and so did Bobby and the others. Okay, this is awkward.
As soon as English was over and it was time to go home, everyone started bombarding me with questions.
"So your eyes aren't as piercing after all," said Daphne. "You look way better now."
"I thought you were a freak," said James. "What was with the getup anyway?"
"I dunno, mood?" I just said, frantically packing my bag to get out of this place as fast as I can.
"Why do you walk home anyway?" Someone else asked.
"My place is nearby, so I just walk home," I said. "It would be silly if I didn't because my place is super near."
I quickly packed up and ran out of the classroom. Penelope was waiting for me there. I ran to her in relief.
"Bombarded?" Penelope asked with a smirk and then started laughing. "Well yeah! You went from scary goth girl to nice and cheerful girl in like a week! Of course they'd be surprised. I was surprised too, remember? I didn't even believe you."
"Yeah that was bad, wasn't it," I said with a sigh. "Anyway, you wanna come over or are your parents coming for you?"
"I'm coming over," said Penelope. "It's Monday, they only come late today."
I nod and we skipped off to my place. We reached the gate of my house and I started looking for my keys to unlock the front door.
I was trying to open it when suddenly we heard a rustle behind us. I turned around to see a bush moving.
"Did you hear that?" I asked Penelope.
"Mmhmm," Penelope said. "Can you pick up the pace?"
"I'm trying!" I said, frantically shaking the key inside the whole. "It just won't open!"
Did I mention how much I hate this lock? It's so hard to open! The strange rustling noise continued and I was panicking, making it even harder to open the gate. What if it was a fox? Or worse, a monkey! I've heard my neighbours complaining about a vicious monkey prowling around the neighbourhood.
"Here let me try," said Penelope, and shoved me aside to try the key. "There's a certain trick to it."
And to my surprise, she got it open in less than a minute. She swung the gate open and we ran in. We started breathing in relief when we heard someone burst out in laughter. It didn't sound like someone, it sounded more like some people!
We looked at the bush and two faces peeked out and started laughing at us. It was Bobby and Daniel! The beasts!
"Those idiots..." I said. "Come on, Penelope, we'll just go in."
"I told you this was a bad idea," Linda said. "Now look at what you've done! We were planning to hang out with Ash and now she's just leaving us here..."
"Oh come on, we were only kidding," I said, unlocking the gate. "But you guys really startled us!"
"Yeah and it was fun!" Daniel said. "Oh you should've seen the looks on your faces!"
"Yeah and I filmed it!" Bobby said, showing his phone. "I'm gonna send it to you guys later."
We went in and they started watching the video while laughing at us. Penelope and I just sat there, staring blankly at them. They can be such jerks sometimes...
Soon they went home after hanging around.
And I was finally able to be at peace. I was thankful to be able to play my favourite video games and read my favourite books again.
So that's what I did. I closed my room door, turned my music on, loudly and started playing my favourite game, KOF ALL STAR.
My neighbours might think I'm having a party up here every hour a day everyday, but I'm just listening to music on my Hi-Fi.
I have no idea what's gonna become of me in school tomorrow. How on earth am I gonna explain to all of them that it was just a phase? I'm not too keen on telling them that it was a disguise because if I do, I'll have to do even more explaining!
