An uncomfortable feeling grew in John's chest as he watched you talk with Arthur. The older man was laughing and smiling while you were blushing bright red. God, he hated the sight. Why couldn't he be the one making you flustered like that?

As he watched you both interact, John couldn't help but let his mind wander to thoughts of you and the feelings that he had had for so long.

You had been with the gang for years, not as long as Arthur or himself but more than long enough to be family. You had actually joined a short time after Jack was born.

He had fallen for you quickly but assumed that you wouldn't be interested in him, either assuming that he had something going on with Abigail or not wanting to be with a man who already had a son...or simply not being interested in him like that. Still, the two of you became close. Actually, the two of you became the best of friends.

You were always the first person John went too when he needed a partner for a job, and he was always the first you went too.

The two of you would go into town together to visit the saloon, returning to the camp with his arm slung over your shoulder as you guided him to his tent, the two of you laughing and earning annoyed looks from the other members of the camp.

You even loved Jack and encouraged John to spend more time with his son, which Abigail was grateful for. You were always on his side, he could always rely on you...but recently you had been spending a lot of time with Arthur, leading to moments like this. Were John tortured himself by watching the two of you interact.

Of course the two of you had always been friends but John always thought that you and him had more of a connection, it just hurt him. Though, he wouldn't admit that he was actually jealous.

John snapped out of his thoughts when he saw you approaching, walking over to him with a smile on your face.

"Hey John. You alright? You look like you're in your own little world there" you asked playfully.

"Just thinking" John shook his head, clearing his throat quietly as he came to his senses.

"Well that's new" you joked. "Thinking about anything interesting?" you asked, genuinely curious. He was your friend after all.

"No" John sighed as he stood up from his place at the campfire. "I've gotta look at some score with Javier, I'll see ya later...or something" he mumbled before going to walk past you, making you frown.

"John" you caught his arm gently, making him turn back to face you. "Are you sure you're alright?" you asked, more concerned this time.

"I'm fine. Just leave it" John huffed as he pulled his arm out of your grasp before just walking away.

You did your best to shake it off and carry on with your day but you couldn't help but worry. Of course you had noticed that John had been uncharacteristically cold towards you and you had no idea why. You had gone to Arthur, since he was probably your second closest friend in the gang, and asked him about it but he had just told you that John had been weirdly hostile towards him for no reason. He didn't know why either. So you were definitely a little worried about John.

-----

It had been a few days since John went on that scouting mission with Javier and since he got back, he had barely even spoken to you. You were pretty sure he was avoiding you but you had no idea why. He had been your closest friend for a few years now, you couldn't just leave it be.
