harlee's pov:
monday afternoon

as soon as I opened my bedroom door I dropped my backpack at the door.

I kicked my foot back against the door causing it to shut as I padded over to my bed.

I narrowed my eyebrows as my eyes darted over to my nightstand.

there was a  piece of notebook paper in my moms handwriting that said, 'gone out with some friends for the afternoon. should be back around 10.'

out of excitement for my mom I felt a small smile plaster across my lips.

my mom is a health care worker which rarely gives her the personal time she needs, especially since she tends to work night shifts.

I crumbled the paper into a small ball before walking over to my trash can and throwing it away.

I got back to my bed slowly crawling underneath my comforter while pulling my phone out of my side pocket.

I let my eyes read over the few notifications I had, but my eyes couldn't help but focus on the two messages.

2 unread messages from baby.

a smile slowly spread over my lips reminiscing on the day he changed his contact name to that.

I began to read over what he texted me, pursing my lips together out of excitement.

baby: lmk when you make it home
baby: also tell me whenever you want me to pick you up for school

me: I'm home
me: also tomorrow is fine

after pressing send, immediately after my phone vibrated, another message from baby at the top of my phone screen.

baby: you saying 'its fine' makes me think you don't want me to pick you up

me: sorry
me: I would love it if you could pick me up tomorrow in your beautiful car

baby: love???????????

me: it's a joke wanna

baby: finally picking up on the nickname

me: how did you even get that nickname

baby: because I 'wanna' do everything
baby: duh

me: ........oh

baby: you don't have to be such a hater

me: fuck you

baby: that's okay but I will fuck you

I took a double take at the message he had just sent to me.

my fingers were still above the keyboard, not knowing how to reply back.

I could feel the anxiousness flowing throughout my gut.

this is all supposed to be fake I thought, but sometimes I can't help but think how can he still be faking.

because I know I'm definitely not anymore.

my phone buzzed again following by another message appearing.

baby: what's your nickname

me: I don't really have one

baby: okay then what's your middle name

me: it's kind of ugly
me: it's a boy name

baby: that makes you UNIQUE

me: just rolled my eyes

baby: you're so sassy for no reason
baby: what is it?

me: grey

baby: so harlee grey mccain

me: yes

baby: that's not ugly
baby: I think thats pretty

my eyes examined over his words as I reread them in my head.

I've never really liked my name because I always thought my middle name threw it off. but after what javon said it definitely makes me feel better about it.

me: thanks

baby: I mean you got to own your name confidently
baby: you only get one

me: unless you change it

baby: are you planning on doing so?

me: no

baby: okay then
baby: as long as you know it then that's all that matters

me: how sweet

baby: I'm about to take a nap
baby: but I'll be there in the morning to pick you up

me: okay

baby: make sure to tell your mom!

me: I will
me: I promise

baby: okay good

I could feel my cheeks heating up unintentionally as I shut off my phone; rolling over in my bed.

as I turned over I looked straight at the bouquet of flowers that he brought over the day he introduced himself to my mom.

they were starting to die but I don't think I could throw them away.

every time I catch myself thinking about him it makes me realize how much he has me wrapped around my finger.

I hope he's not starting to notice as much as I am.
