"My Queen," started Hubert as he bowed in front of Edelgard, "You need something of me?"

As her eyes wandered at the horizon, she murmured, lost in thought, "Tell the councilors that I won't be attending their meeting tomorrow."

"Your majesty?" The right hand man raised his brow, "May I ask why?"

Now that they had known each other for so long, Hubert allowed himself to question his queen's choices.

"Tomorrow would've been (Y/N)'s birthday," she said solemnly.

"Ah. Right."

She glared back at him, as she raised a brow, "Do I sense a sort of annoyance in your voice, Hubert? May I remind you that she was my queen? As I am yours?" She sighed, glancing back into the distance.

(Y/N) had been Edelgard's wife for a few years. They had gotten married in the midst of war, as to officialize their relationship which had begun early in their academic years, and to strengthen the bonds between both their houses during the war.

Alas, (Y/N) never made it to the end of this filthy war. She was killed during battle and never had Edelgard felt pain so strongly in her life than on the day she lost her dear queen.

Times were few when Hubert would see his mistress governed so intensely by her emotions, she who always seemed so cold and distant.

Edelgard still mourned the death of her late wife. She found little to no enjoyment in the activities that once soothed her, her days were governed by the memory of her loss, all she did was in her name, and how she dressed and how she acted was a testimony to the profound sorrow she felt.

The birthdays of her late wife were the most atrocious to bare for Edelgard. Spending them alone, with the memory only of (Y/N) on her heart was difficult.

"I still remember all her birthdays that we spent together as if they had all happened one day after the other not so long ago," she remarked with a hint of melancholy in her voice.

Hubert did not answer.

"I even remember the gifts I gave her- each one- where are they, Hubert?"

"In her old room, in the safe, but some of them are buried with her."

"Right," lost in thought, Edelgard recalled of the moments she spent with her dear (Y/N). She used to dearly treasure those days, but now, she hated them with a passion.

"And one you wear, in her memory," he noted, "The necklace, I believe?"

"Yes. It's true," she looked down at her neck, "The necklace, that I bought for her first birthday that we spent together," she then began to touch it, and, Edelgard could still vividly remember how (Y/N) too, touched this necklace with such care when she held the gift in her hands for the first time.

"Oh, Edie... It's gorgeous," (Y/N) murmured softly, as she gazed in awe at the beautiful necklace she was holding in her hands, "It's such a work of art... I'm too afraid I might break it," and she chuckled, as she carefully grazed the gold.

"If you break it, I'll just buy you another one," Edelgard simply said. It wasn't as if she couldn't allow herself to spend money, and besides, she would buy (Y/N) the world if she wished it.

(Y/N) blushed, before looking down at the floor bashfully, "I'd rather you keep your money for more important things."

"Nothing is important if it's not for you, (Y/N). Besides, you needed the gift. I've never seen you wear jewelry and I just knew that you would look breathtaking in gold."

"Oh, (Y/N)... You spoil me rotten."

Edelgard smiled softly, "It doesn't hurt, a gift or two once in a while. Besides, having you by my side every day is a gift itself, so, really, I'm in your debt. I'm the rotten one here."

Her dear friend laughed, "... Rotten! You're being silly, Edie- Come here, help me put it on," she said, as she handed the necklace to Edelgard. She pulled up her hair, and the princess obeyed with utmost seriousness.

(Y/N) then looked at herself in the mirror and smiled as she grazed the necklace sitting on her neck.

"It's so beautiful. I don't think I can bring myself to ever take it off!"

And she never did take it off. For years, the necklace remained, a constant reminder of Edelgard's love for her.

And now, Edelgard was wearing it, in memory of her long lost love.

She never took it off. For years since the death of her loved one, the necklace remained, a constant reminder of (Y/N)'s love for her.
