JAMES AND I DEPART TO
Studio-B to work on our solos. I look in the mirror, watching James stretch behind me. The whole situation makes my blood boil, but nothing is worse than us not talking to each other.

I sigh deeply, turning to face him as I run a hand over my face. "What are we gonna do?" I ask, breaking the silence as James comes closer.

"We've been doing the duet every year. You'd think they'd keep us together."

"I don't think I can do this. I can't just go to internationals without you, and I know you can't either." I explain as James shakes his head.

"You want to bow out? Noelle, you can't bow out. We're dancing for The Next Step, for the team." He says, stepping right up to me.

"You remember when Kate asked you to be dance captain and choreograph the group dance?" He asks as I nod. "You had a great routine. Promise me you will dance as hard as you can, no matter what."

"And you? You're going to do the same?" I ask. I know James, he'll make me keep my word but I don't know if he'll keep his own.

"Of course. Of course I'll do the same. It's for the team." He declares. "Promise me." He asks again.

"Okay." I accept, looking up at him. James pulls me into a hug, kissing the top of my head.

"I'll dance my heart out and he'll do the same."

Both studios meet back in Studio-A and from my spot next to James, I catch Daniel looking over here with a sinister look. He should keep himself in check or we might drop him again.

"Okay, Noelle, you're up first." Kate says softly. James wraps his arm around me, pulling me in for a side hug, which I accept graciously.

My team cheers for me as I take the floor. I chose the song "Falling Behind" as I started my routine. I just let my emotions take control and dance like I've never done before.

My aerials, ball change kicks, pirouettes are all at their peak. Completely flawless. I try to drown out everyone and act as if there are no ones in the room, but all I can feel is James' fierce gaze on me.

"Dancing against the person I love hurts. I'm just doing what James wants because he's right. I have to do this."

Towards the end of my dance, I originally wanted to end in the splits near the front of the stage, but I stop in front of James, watching as he claps the loudest for me with a strong smile, making my throat swell with tears.

"You're perfect." He whispers before walking past me and going to the centre. I turn on my heels before taking a seat beside Chloe, catching my breath.

James' music hits and I watch intently as he just stands there. As the music plays, he looks over at me and I give him a nod of encouragement. My eyes widen as he shakes his head and walks out of the studio.
