IT'S THE SEVENTIETH FOURTH ANNUAL HUNGER GAMES!!!!

I looked down to my little sister, Agnes. She looked up at me with teary eyes and I kissed her forehead.
"It'll be alright." I promise. "Your name won't get drawn."
She sniffled and we went into the area for when the names got called.

I held her had as Effie Trinket pulled the name out of the girl's bucket.

"Y/N Y/L/N!" She waved her hand around and it felt as though time froze.
"No." Agnes whispered.
I squeezed her hand then kissed her cheek, "I'll be alrigh-"
"No!! NOOO!!" She screamed.

I walked up to the stage with a blank expression... This wasn't real. It couldn't have been...

I woke up with a gasp, my face was wet with tears and I jolted out of the capital's bed, running to the bathroom to splash my face with water.

The same dream flooded my mind every time I fell asleep, the memory haunting me.

I looked at my reflection and bit my lip. Today was the day we would be sent to the treacherous arena.

I walked down to the dining table and saw almost everyone seated. Everyone but the boy from my district. His name was Newt.

We usually don't talk that often.

A hand grabbed my wrist just as I was about to sit down, and dragged me into a more private hall.
"Newt?" I questioned.
"Will you be my ally?" He asked, searching my face.
"Can I trust you?" I gulped.
"Yes. I trust you." He replied softly. His eyes were so genuine, I couldn't say no.
"Okay." I agreed.

***

I stepped in my tube, looking at my designer one last time.

It pulled me up and I shook violently. My eyes scanned the scenery and it appeared to be a forest type setting. The cornucopia was ahead of me and Newt was a few places down from mine. We made eye contact and just as the countdown finished I ran in his direction, picking up a backpack along the way.

He had a backpack too and we sprinted as fast as we could into the woods.

We ran and ran until our legs couldn't move any longer and I whispered, leaning against a tree, "We made it."

***

We found a cave to take shelter in as night fell and I realized that there was only one sleeping bag.

"We'll have to share." I said quietly. I took it out of my bag and laid it on the ground. "You first."
"Okay." He said shyly crawling in.

I laid on top of him, my head rested on his chest.

***

It's been two days and the cave has kept us pretty safe. No one has found us yet.

Newt and I softly talk about our lives and we only have one problem: food.

I can collect fruit for us to eat, but we're not eating enough. The day prior we did receive a sponsor... they gave us filling granola bars.

As Newt was telling me about his sister an announcement came on.

"We have two announcements. There can be two victors if and only if they come from the same district..." The man paused, and I jumped on Newt, hugging him.
"We could go home." He whispered.
"We could."
"The second announcement is this," The man continued, "there is something every one of you needs. Four bags for the four remaining districts are being placed at the cornucopia at dawn tomorrow. Good luck, these will be the only announcements."
"What do they think we need?" I asked him.
"I don't know." He said.
"We should plan this out."
"Okay."

So we talked about whether or not we should attempt to grab the bag.

We came to the conclusion that since he was faster, he would get it.
"I don't want you getting hurt, though."

I had started to develop feelings for the boy sitting across from me. I knew it was dangerous- to feel an emotion like that towards someone who could betray you, but I couldn't help it.

"Y/N, I'll be alright." He yawned.
"We should get some sleep," I said, "we can confirm in the morning."
"Okay."

We crawled into the sleeping bag and I closed my eyes, trying to sleep. I snuggled my face into the crook of his neck and I could feel him smile tiredly.

I couldn't sleep, knowing that he'd go and get the supplies from the cornucopia.

I cuddled with him until I fell asleep, and I felt so much more relaxed, forgetting about the uneasiness I felt earlier about him leaving.

***

The next morning I yawned and realized that he wasn't sleeping anymore. I got out of the sleeping bag and looked around.

He was nowhere to be seen.

"He went to get the bag." I mumbled, getting ready to leave.

My heart stopped when I heard a cannon go off.

I fell to the ground crying, and hoping that it wasn't him. It couldn't be him. It can't be him.

I waited an hour. I waited two hours.

There was no sign of him and I was devastated.

I could hear someone, or something, crawl into the hidden cave.

"Y/N?"
"Newt?" I leaped up and ran to him, engulfing him into a hug and planting kisses and tears of happiness all over his face.
"This is a nice welcome." He murmured after I kissed his lips.
"What happened?" I sobbed, "I thought you were dead! I thought you were-"
"Shhh, shhhh. I'm alright, you're alright." He hugged me and rubbed circles on my back.

"Want to see what's in the bag?"
"What happened to you?" I asked, ignoring his question. I wiped my tears away and sat on the cave floor next to him.
"Let's see what's in the bag." He replied, ignoring my question.

"What is it?" He asked inspecting a tube of ointment.
"I don't know," I trailed off, then took it from him. I smelled it and it smelled like medicine. "It looks like it would be for a cut or something." Recognition lit up all over his face. "What?" I asked.

He rolled up his pant leg and I saw a nasty gash on his ankle.

"Newt," I whispered as I applied the ointment to the wound, "what happened to you?"

He paused before saying,
"I killed the boy from district four, but he busted up my ankle before hand."
"That's what the cannon was for?" I quietly questioned as I wrapped a bandage around it.
"Yeah." He looked down, not making eye contact with me.
"Hey," I lifted his chin to look at me, "you had to do what you had to do." The hunger games makes monsters of even the most innocent.

"He told me that he'd kill you," He said, closing his eyes as a tear dribbled down his cheek, "and Y/N, I couldn't let that happen. I- I- I love you."

He opened his eyes and the welcoming brown orbs gazed into mine, "I love you, Newt."

He bit his lip and his eyes flickered down to my lips. He abruptly leaned in and pressed his lips to mine and the moment we touched it felt like fireworks were coursing through my body.

He held my face with his hands as our lips moved in sync.

Nothing was on my mind except him. Only him.

After I breathlessly pulled away, I realized that the happiest moment of my life was spent in the hunger games arena.
