"Welcome to our school, Evan!"

Evan smiled weakly at the over enthusiastic counselor, silently conveying his fears.

"Don't worry, I've brought in two students who I believe will be perfect for you!" The woman had a grin plastered on her face, making Evan feel like she hadn't seen color as long as she was born. No one who'd seen color could smile that fake, it was just unnatural. "They are friends, and from what I've heard, they could use another person in their group!"

Evan glanced back down at the floor when he heard the office door creak open.

"Connor, Jared, this is our new student, Evan Hansen!"

Evan glanced up at the two boys, and was instantly hit with color. He jumped slightly and began looking around excitedly, missing the fact that the two boys standing there did the same thing.

"Hold shit. You're my soulmate!" The smaller one said excitedly. "Shit, dude, this is awesome!"

"Language." The counselor said, smiling. She clasped her hands together. "I'm so happy!"

The smaller boy stepped forward, and closer to Evan. Up close, Evan could see the light brown mixed in with his blue eyes.

"Jared Kleinman, at your service." Jared said, bowing. "Pleasure to met you, soulmate."

"Hey, Jared, could, uh, could you get more popcorn?" Evan asked during their movie night date.

"Yeah, I've got you babe." Jared said, snatching the popcorn bowl from Evan, and giving him a kiss in return. He got up and walked out of the kitchen, humming some song that Evan didn't know.

Evan glanced back at the movie, his eyes facing around the screen at all the pretty colors.

Suddenly, the screen went black and white.

"Jared!" Evan got up quickly, almost falling over. "Jared, fuck, Jared please!"

Jared ran out of the kitchen, seemingly unharmed. "What? What's wrong?" Jared studied Evans face. "Are you hurt?"

"Uh. No, no, but, uh." Evan stuttered out, thinking through his options.

Should I tell him? Evan thought. No. No, at least not now. My soulmate is... my soulmate is dead. And I, I like Jared. I'm his soulmate, so-

"Evan?" Jared asked quietly. "Baby, you're scaring me."

"I just, uh, thought I heard something. I'm so, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to-"

"Hey. It's okay. I'm okay." Jared pulled Evan closer to his chest, holding the bowl of popcorn out. "Do you want to keep watching the movie?"

Evan nodded, walking back to the couch.

Jared's phone buzzed, and Jared hesitated before declining the call. He was almost to his seat next to Evan, when Zoe called again. He ignored it, opting to sit down with Evan instead.

Just as he was about to grab some popcorn, his phone buzzed again. "Holy fuck, Zoe, the hell you want?" Jared paused, his face draining of color. "No. You're fucking with me. Zoe, that's a horrible thing, did you brother put you up to this?" Jared's words spilled out of his mouth, trying to stop the tears from falling.

"No. No." Jared hung up quickly, panting.

"What?" Evan asked softly, as if not to be disrespectful.

"Connors... he just, he just killed him self?" Jared asked as if he didn't know it was true.

Evan quickly got up, holding jared in his arms as Jared finally broke down, burying his head into Evans chest as he sobbed.

Evan used his hand to draw circles into Jared's back, his mind repeating one phrase over and over again.

It was him. Connor was my soulmate.
