EXTRA: ROMAN NUMERALS

31K 1.7K 1.6K

as promised.
also, this was a double update, so don't forget to read chapter cv (you'll know what number it is by the end of this hopefully)

i = 1

v = 5

x = 10

l = 50

c = 100

basic rules:

>a number cannot be repeated more than three times

examples:

iii ✔️

iiii , iv ✔️

xxx ✔️

xxxx , xl ✔️

lxxxx , xc ✔️

>if a smaller number follows a bigger number, they add

examples:

i is less then v (1 is less than 5), so vi = 6 ✔️

v is less than x (5 is less than 10), so xv = 15 ✔️

x is less than l (10 is less than 50), so lxx = 70 ✔️

>if a smaller number come before a bigger number, they subtract

examples:

i is less then v (1 is less than 5), so iv = 4 ✔️

i is less than x (1 is less than 10), so ix = 9 ✔️

x is less than l (10 is less than 50), so xl = 40 ✔️

x is less than c (10 is less than 100), so xc = 90 ✔️

here's some demonstrations:

i = 1 ✔️

ii = 2  ✔️

iii = 3 ✔️

iv  =  4 ✔️

v = 5 ✔️

vi = 6 ✔️

vii = 7 ✔️

viii = 8 ✔️

ix = 9 ✔️

x = 10 ✔️

some possible questions you may have:

>why is 8 viii, but 9 is ix? see the first rule

>that's great, but what happens after 10? great question! onward we go!

xi = 11 ✔️

xii = 12 ✔️

xiii = 13 ✔️

xiv = 14 ✔️

xv = 15 ✔️

xvi = 16 ✔️

xvii = 17 ✔️

xviii = 18 ✔️

xix = 19 ✔️

xx = 20 ✔️

some possible questions you may have:

>19 looks complicated! why? how?! the first x is larger than what follows, so think about adding that (+10). the next number is i (1) which is less than x (10), so 10 - 1 = 9. 10 + 9 = 19

>okay, i'm getting the hang of the one's place, but what about higher ten's place digits? onward!

x = 10 ✔️

xx = 20 ✔️

xxx = 30 ✔️

xl = 40 ✔️

l = 50 ✔️

lx = 60 ✔️

lxx = 70 ✔️

lxxx = 80 ✔️

xc = 90 ✔️

c = 100 ✔️
