•·················•·················•Vienna sat with the world a silent echo around her as Natalie sang a sweet tune of happy birthday to her. And in her hands was a little cupcake with a candle pocked in the top. The Golden flame shone in her eyes but Vienna didn't really take any notice at all.
Today was the day and although she had been happy about how this day would end she was also a little upset. What about the world she had yet to see? The happiness she had yet to find?
But no matter what Vienna thought nothing would change her mind now.
"Happy birthday!" Natalie sat down on her bed with the brightest of smiles on her face, "make a wish?"
There was no wish other than when tonight came, she wished she'd go quickly and painlessly. Life could at least grant her that one mercy but Vienna had her doubts.
She blew out the candle and it was as though her life went away with the flame also. Natalie cheered and wrapped her hands around her best friend.
"Thank you," Vienna said and meant it and not only for the little cupcake in her hands, "for everything."
"Of course," Natalie's smile was softer but somehow more meaningful, "I will always be here for you no matter what."
"I know," Vienna's smile was genuine.
Natalie took a moment to watch her, and then stood to her feet and said, "Okay, now let's start getting ready for your party."
"I actually think I'm going to go on a walk quickly," Vienna uttered and Natalie gave her a confused glance.
"A walk?" she asked.
"Yeah," Vienna replied, "I want to get some alone time before tonight and all the birthday wishes from people who most likely don't like me but just want the free alcohol."
"That's not true," Natalie scoffed with a tilt of her head, "you're like the coolest person at this dreadful school."
Vienna laughed, "yeah, right."
She had spent her first year's in the background and not because she was an out cast but because that's where she wanted to be. The more invisible that she was the less people she would have to tell. Fewer people would notice her cuts and bruises.
She guessed her only friends were Theo, Blaise and Natalie. Pansy when she started dating Natalie and of course Draco. But he was far, far more than a friend. But Vienna appreciated that Natalie was trying to make her feel better.
But there was nothing that she could say now.

Vienna only wanted to go on a walk to see the outside world. To see the school one last time and see the sun one last time. She found a fallen tree on the path to Hogsmeade and sat on it where she admired everything. Even the small little flowers and the little butterflies that passed her. She peered around as the wind lightly ruffled her hair, a cigarette between her fingers.
She was so amazed and dazed at the beautiful world that she forgot where was. It was magical. And Vienna found the greatest comfort in the thought that she would never have to live in this world for no longer than a few more hours.
"I was just on my way to wish you a happy birthday."
Vienna turned her head and saw Owens standing with his hands in his pockets, his hair a little more messier than usual.
"Why is it you always just appear out of nowhere," Vienna asked as she took a drag of her cigarette.
He laughed and lowered his head, "you just don't see me coming."
Vienna thought she would never see him again and a part of her was glad for it. He was the one who killed Draco but she has strangely grown a bond with him that even she can't deny. The way he was always there for her was something she wasn't used to. And she couldn't help but like it.
But this man had secrets and she didn't like that. Like who was "D" and why was he so kind and so keen to keep her happy and safe? And why was he there that day when they got caught? Why was a private investment at a police chase?
"Can I ask you something?" Vienna said, throwing her cigarette to the floor.
Owen's walked closer toward her, "anything."
"Who is D?" she asked him abruptly and watch his face pale and watched as he shifted uncomfortably.
"What?" he stuttered.
"Who is D?" she asked again.
"I don't know what you're—"
"I saw it on your phone so please don't lie to me," Vienna said simply but her heart was racing and pounding so hard in her chest.
"There are things you can't know yet," Owens said, "things that I want to tell you but I can't. Not until he—not until things are sorted."
His words made no sense, "what things need to be sorted? Who are you talking about?"
"I can't tell you, Vienna," the way he said her name was so. . . desperate. Like he was begging her not to go deeper. And God, she wanted too but then she remembered that there wasn't really a point. Not with so few hours left.
"I suppose it doesn't really matter anyway," Vienna shrugged and jumped off the tree, "after today everything will be better."
"What does that mean?" Owens asked and it was now his turn to be confused.
Vienna smiled, "you will know tomorrow, I guess," she said the sweet words and felt the freedom crawling at her.
"You're worrying me," he said and stepped closer to her, resting his hand on her arm.
"There is nothing to worry about," Vienna smiled and turned as though to walk away, "I'll be with him."

The words Vienna left him with were haunting him. He was sweating atrociously from either how worried he was or from how fast he ran back to his room at the Inn. He slammed his door shut and went straight to his phone but his hands were shaking and sticky with sweat that it was hard to dial his number.
He can't keep doing this. It's not fair to her, she is drowning in grief. She has lost a part of herself. It's not fair. And he is done sitting by and watching. He has noticed how frail and skinny she has gotten. How tired she looks and how completely lost she is.
He can't keep lying and putting on a clueless act. This deal has broke him.
And what he was about to do now — this decision was either going to get himself killed or save her. He is not ready. Things are too dangerous at the moment. But this was no longer an option.
So when he answered the phone and a cold, dangerous "what?" came threw the phone Owens knew this mistake would be worth it because at least he'd know she'd be alright.
Owens yelled through the phone, "You need to get here now. . ."
