I received a request to write (Y/N) as a mermaid who was also a childhood friend of Kurapika. Thank you for your request. I always have fun putting Kurapika into different situations. Enjoy! I look forward to reading your comments.

The Priceless Item*

Kurapika

My boots squish into the mud as I walk to my favorite reading spot. I usually play with Pairo when I'm finished with my schoolwork, but I haven't been able to see him since he came down with the flu. I sure do hope he gets better soon.

Beautiful green swirl-patterned trees surround me. The lush grass is wet with dew. A flock of birds fly above me as I sit down next to a tree. I open my book to where I left off and begin to read. I can hear the sound of the river in front of me. I sigh. I really am lucky to live here with my clan.

I lose track of time as I become engrossed in my book. I instinctively swat away at the pebbles that are hitting my face. I look up from my book. Where are these tiny rocks coming from? I stand on my feet, looking around. I don't see anyone.

"Over here," someone says.

My ears must be playing tricks on me. I follow the sound of the voice and end up at the riverbank. I look down at the crystal clear water. I jump back, blinking my eyes. What's a girl doing here and how did she find The Lukso Province?

"Hello?" I say, bending over to get a better view. "Are you hurt?"

She shakes her head. "I finally got your attention."

She supports the top half of her body with her arms. My hands instinctively cover my face.

"Uh...your shirt is missing!" I say, turning around so my back is facing her.

She giggles. "Don't worry. My hair covers me well."

I slowly turn back around, peeking through my fingers. I fall on my behind when she reveals the bottom half of her body.

I've read hundreds of books. Many of which included stories about merfolk. But I thought those were all myths.

My mouth falls open as she waves her green fin in the air. The sunlight reflects off her wet scales. To describe it as beautiful would be an understatement.

I wait for the shock to leave my body before walking back to her. "How did you get here?"

A look of sadness crosses her face. "My family was taken away. I escaped and was forced to adapt to freshwater in order to hide out."

My heart aches for her. "Who would do such a terrible thing?"

She reaches up and grabs my arm. She stares at it as she runs her fingers up and down. "There's bad people out there. You and your clan need to be extra careful."

Drops of water roll off my arm. She presses her hand against mine to compare the two. I notice she has a slight webbing in between each of her fingers.

I ignore her warning as my curiosity gets the best of me. "May I ask you some questions?" I say.

She drops my hand and looks back up at me, face flushed. "I'm sorry. I've never touched a human before. But go ahead. Ask me anything."

I pull my arm back, drying it with my tabard. "My name's Kurapika. What's yours?"

"(Y/N)."

"That's a pretty name. How old are you?"

She floats on her back. "Twelve."

"Like me! One more question...how can you understand me? I thought mermaids used echolocation, like dolphins."
