The enforcers that survived were the first ones that began to clean up. Ambessa and her soldiers retrieved their thrown spears, yanking them out of the heads of the dead creatures and spilling out more Shimmer on the ground. Vi jumped down off the stage, moving towards me as I did the same to her. Once close enough, she wrapped her arms around me and I wrapped my own around her neck.

"Are you okay?" she whispered, tightening her hold slightly as I buried my face into her shoulder.

"I am now," I mumbled back just before pulling away. She ran her fingers across my left cheek, a small smile crossing her lips before we both looked around. There were bodies everywhere--most of them enforcers--some of them towns people. My heart sank at the sight, trying not to look too hard just in case I would recognize one of them. Vi slinked away, grabbing my hand and effectively pulling me along with her. We heard a blade being slinked out of tissue, looking over to the side to see Ambessa standing face to face with her guard as he pulled out his spear out of the largest of the dead creatures.

"Perimeter secured," he declared to her, but her eyes trailed over to Vi and I as we continued to walk.

"We'll see," she responded, beginning to walk the other way. Making sure to give Vi and I one final glare before turning. I lowered my head down, continuing to walk hand in hand with Vi. Did Ambessa--blame us for the attack?

Once we had finally found Caitlyn, she was sitting on a bed inside a tent set up by the enforcers to check on any wounds. Maddie and her silent enforcer friend were checking Caitlyn's eye, waving a light in front of it before they heard Vi and I approaching. They soon slipped away as Caitlyn straightened up, and Vi took her hand away from mine to slip her own into her jacket pockets.

"Thought for sure you were gonna get yourself killed," Vi spoke up, her lips pulled back in a nervous smile. But Caitlyn didn't say anything, her eyes on the ground as I watched the two closely. Vi's smile vanished as I heard crying to the side, directing my attention over.

A child was crying, holding their arms out to an enforcer as they hurried over and picked them up.

"Here, come with me," the enforcer said gently, cradling the child to his chest and carrying her away. "I got you."

"A memorial," Caitlyn seethed, turning my attention back to her. Her eyes were wide, face twisted in fury. "What kind of animals?"

"They wanted the spectacle," I spoke up, taking a step forward to line up with Vi.

"They're trying to scare you," Vi added, shrugging her shoulders.

Caitlyn's lips twisted as her body lurched forward. "All they did is piss me off."

"You--You need to find a way to call off the invasion," Vi cut in, earning Caitlyn's attention now.

"What?!"

"This battle was on your soil. Down there, you'll be on their terms."

"None of this is on our terms," Caitlyn argued, turning her eyes back to the ground. She pressed her fingers to her temple, shaking her head slightly.

"Maybe you should change that."

"I don't know how, okay?!" Caitlyn cried, her body caving forward as her eyes snapped back up to us. Vi flinched slightly as I pressed my lips together. "She dies and leaves this giant hole, and I'm just supposed to fill it. Like she was never there to begin with."

Her head ducked down again, tears rolling down her right cheek.

"Hey," Vi whispered softly, grabbing Caitlyn's chin so she was looking back up at her. She brushed her thumb against Caitlyn's cheek as I moved forward, sitting down beside her while laying my hand on her shoulder. "You won't. The hole gets smaller, but... you never fill it."

I took in a deep breath, letting it out slowly as I tried not to picture Whiskers. Remembering all the years she stuck by me--even through the worst of them. She was by my side, always helping me. Always there--and now gone. And I couldn't even find her to say my good-bye.

"I was wrong to spring the badge on you two," Caitlyn spoke up as Vi dropped her hand away from her. Caitlyn looked between us as I lowered my own hand from her shoulder. "It's just... every way I slice it, if I go after your sister alone, one of us comes back in a box. It's all coming apart."

Her voice cracked in the end, and she placed her hands on her knees to steady herself as her body began to rock back and forth.

"No, it isn't," Vi muttered, her lips twitching upwards slightly as she swayed in place. "We won't let it."

I straightened up a little, eyeing Vi closely as she sat down on the other side of Caitlyn. She patted her shoulder once before her blue eyes found mine. I narrowed my gaze on her slightly, trying to figure out what she meant. Vi stared at me for a moment as Caitlyn ducked her head, obscuring my view of her slightly. But I saw her nod once, closing her eyes as she ducked her head as well. And then I realized what she meant. What we were going to do now.
