Can We Talk?

Viktor kept his promise--he worked as much as you could on Vander. Trying to work through his mind and help disconnect him from the beast within. And we kept an eye on him at night in the new tent that was given to the four of us to share. Each of us taking turns to keep an eye on him.

Today was no different. I was walking through the fields that were growing in abundance with yellow flowers. Reaching up to my hips. I smiled as I ran my fingers over the top of them, watching as the petals flowed and moved with the brush of my hand. I had my metal arm wrapped up into a sling, no longer keeping it hanging limply at my side. I stole a glance down at it, running my real hand across the buttons on the wrist. I then heard squeals over to the side, turning my attention back up. Whiskers was running through the field just a few feet away, popping up and down as she jumped over the lines of flowers. She let out a squeak of delight, rolling onto her back through the dirt. I couldn't help but smile a little, chuckling under my breath as I watched her run further away while basking in the freedom.

I heard a clearing of a throat, turning my attention behind me to see Vi slowly approaching. Her hands were stuffed into the pockets of her jacket, shoulders swaying as she moved toward me. My smile faltered as I looked back down at the flowers, my arm falling limp at my side.

"Can we talk?" Vi asked, tilting her head to try and connect our gazes. I licked my lips nervously before nodding, lifting my eyes to lock with her blue ones. Vi nodded with me, taking another step forward before stopping just a foot away. "I tried to look for you--"

"In the bottom of a liquor bottle?" I interrupted, my voice sharpening slightly before I winced. Seeing the hurt that crossed across her face at my words. "Sorry--I--I tried to look for you, too... when I realized you weren't with Caitlyn anymore."

I turned to the side, head beginning to jerk as a Twitch slowly began to probe its way forward. Picturing what had happened back in the vents against my will.

"You heard us," Vi pointed out, pulling her hand out of her jacket pocket to gesture toward me. I snapped my eyes back toward her, my lips twisting slightly as my shoulders tensed up. "You saw--"

"Yeah," I interrupted again as my gaze bore into hers. "I saw."

Silence fell over us, allowing me to hear the chatter of people inside the sanctuary to the side of us. I glance over, looking out over the herd of tents to the sphere that loomed over it all. The light from above casts the whole area in a whimsical glow. The whole view was--breathtaking. It was like a breath of fresh air compared to the streets of Zaun. Even compared to Topside. A place of peace in the midst of so much violence just outside the gates.

Whiskers let out another squeal, and I looked over at her once more to see that she had accidentally fallen on her face from running around. She popped herself onto her hind legs, using her front paws to wipe away the dirt that now coated the front of her nose. Her claws scraped against the metal pieces of her skin.

"Y/n," Vi whispered, turning my attention back to her as she took one small step forward, closing the gap between us as she shook her head, "it's not what it looks like."

"You kissed her," I mumbled, looking her up and down as my eyes began to tear up. "You didn't even push--"

"I did," Vi interrupted, laying a hand on my shoulder and knocking the breath out of me slightly. "I did push her away. Cait--she wasn't thinking. She's grieving, Y/n. And I--I'm sorry."

She moved her hand up to cup my cheek, brushing away the stray tear that had fallen down.

"I would never--never do that to you," she pushed on, leaning her head forward and pressing her forehead against mine. I closed my eyes, feeling my body unraveling at each passing second. "I love you."

My eyes sparked open, jerking my head back from her as my lips parted in a silent gasp. Her hand fell away from my cheek as she opened her eyes as well, panic swarming through her blue irises as she swayed in place.

"What?" I rasped out, feeling my body begin to tighten up once again.

Vi's lips parted as well, going to say something but nothing came out. She stayed silent for a moment before sighing, running a hand through her black hair.

"I love you," she repeated, turning her eyes back onto me as her shoulders sagged. Her arms dropped at her sides as she stayed planted in place. "I have since we were kids. Ever since I met you, I knew you were someone special. Someone to hold close to. And when I thought I lost you--I was broken. I didn't know how to handle myself. And then I found you again--that spark coming back in me. But you didn't remember me--and I thought I lost you again. Y/n, I am so sorry--about everything. Not being there for you when you needed me most, not trying harder to get out of Stillwater to come look for you, not--"

I broke forward, wrapping my arm around her neck before planting my lips on hers. She stumbled back at the sudden force before steadying herself, her eyes closing as her hand went to the back of my neck and held me close. I could feel her body relaxing just by the way I moved against her, deepening the kiss and running my hand through the back of her hair before slowly pulling away. Her face moved forward with me, our lips falling away as I opened my eyes to stare up into her deep ocean ones.

"I love you, too," I whispered softly, running my hand back to cup her cheek. "I'm so sorry for running away--for hiding instead of talking. Working it out like I should've. I was hurt--I thought you... I thought--"

"I didn't," Vi interrupted, running a hand on the top of my head before cupping the back of it and pressing her forehead against mine once more.
