The man brought us back into the crowd of tents, approaching a well that was built into the ground. Jinx hopped up on the edge of it, beginning to balance herself as she walked around its curve. Isha stood next to Vander's side as he hovered his head over the water's surface, looking down at his reflection as I plopped down onto the well. Whiskers trailed to the side of me, her nose pointed directly at the piece of fruit in my hand. I smirked slightly before tossing it up into the air. She immediately caught it in her jaws, swallowing the fruit whole.
"Vander's psyche is deeply entangled with that of the beast," the man began to explain, turning his body and sitting down right next to me. I recoiled, cringing as I slowly moved myself away from him. Whiskers turned to attention as well, red eyes falling on his frame.
"How did you know his name?" Vi asked, standing right in front of him just before my head jerked to the side. His voice--I've heard his voice before.
"He told me," he answered simply, cradling his cane against the side of his head.
"Viktor."
My head jerked slightly, turning my face away as the name echoed in my head. Remembering it from when Jayce would talk about his friend who had been hurt during the explosion. This was Viktor.
"Ask for a miracle healer," Jinx began to comment as Viktor's eyes found mine as I slowly turned my head back toward him. Faltering when I met his gaze. He looked from me to Whiskers, his eyes studying our frames. "Get a metal fortune cookie."
Vi had sat down on a bench, stealing a glance over at Vander as Isha looked down at the same water he was.
"I saw your father," Viktor spoke, turning his attention back forward. "His dream of your family and vision of Zaun as it could have been, it was--beautiful."
Jinx had done a full circle around the walls of the well, walking just behind me before she swatted the back of my head while coughing out, "Cookie."
I huffed, glaring up at her as she continued to pace. As she walked, she skimmed her hand down Whiskers' back as far as she could before she got too far away.
"Can you help him?" Vi asked.
"I will do all in my power."
My eyes strayed off to the side, watching as Isha ran forward with her helmet clasped between her hands. Water splashed out toward Vander, making him flinch slightly as the little girl held it up to him.
"Hmm?" Isha hummed, keeping it held right under his nose. He began to sniff it, beginning to inquire more and consider.
"However, I have one condition," Viktor added as Jinx made her way around once more. Leaning against the large circular pulley system connected to the well.
"Looks like you got a couple," she snickered.
"You have much to offer this commune, Powder."
Jinx gasped, her hands clutching and jerking on the pulley before a gear suddenly popped off and fell into the water below.
"Your talents can be used to build," Viktor continued on, reaching in and grabbing the small piece before it could reach the bottom, "instead of destroy."
"I'll stick with what I know, thanks," Jinx huffed out, straightening up and beginning to walk once more.
"My condition is that he must be restrained at night. I've seen the harm of which he is capable."
Vi sighed, ducking her head as the black strands of her hair moved slightly in front of her eyes.
"What do you think?" she spoke up, stealing a glance back at Jinx.
Her sister stopped pacing, her back facing us as I looked back over at her as well. "You actually want my opinion?"
Vi smiled softly, head falling to the side some.
Jinx scoffed, jumping down toward Isha as the girl dumped the water out of her helmet. "I hate fortune cookies."
Isha fixed the helmet back onto her head just before Jinx tapped her shoulder. Isha turned, acknowledging her friend before waving at Vander and following after Jinx.
Vi stood up now, moving to stand face to face with Vander as Viktor's eyes fell onto me again. I got to my feet, avoiding his gaze as I rested my hand on Whiskers' head. Turning her attention up to me, I smiled softly before ruffling some of her fur around. I then heard Vi speak up, "We're gonna get you out of there, Vander."
She rested her head against his, and he closed his eyes as he welcomed the small touch.
"You are missing parts of your mind," Viktor spoke up, forcing me to look down at him. "Stuck between two different lifespans."
"Focus on Vander," I huffed, turning away while running my hand over the circular pulley. "Then you can try to put my missing pieces back together."
"My energy will not be depleted," Viktor assured me as he rose to his feet. He balanced some of his weight on his cane as I took a step back, bumping into Whiskers as she curled around me. "It will only take a second."
He turned his body in our direction as Whiskers' head perked up. Watching him as he extended his hand out.
"Allow me to demonstrate," he whispered just before pressing two fingers right between Whiskers' eyes. I stumbled away, letting out a soft gasp as I watched Whisker's red eyes roll back as his eyes glowed white. Purple streaks of magic began to stream out from his hand, engulfing the large mouse in its light as pieces of metal flew toward her frame. Attaching themselves to different parts of her body. The bald spots where the bulging veins were soon covered, smoothing down the bumps and entangling the metal into her skin.
He pulled his hand away, steadying himself with his cane as Whiskers' head jerked back down. Blinking rapidly, she began to shake her head around before rubbing her paw against her left ear. My lips parted as I let out a slow breath, taking in the sight. Parts of her gray fur was now streaked with white, and there were no longer bald spots showing patches of her skin underneath. Her tail had turned a brighter pink, going back to its original color. She remained the same size as she was now, still towering over the rest of us. But now her eyes were the same brown color from before--with three circular pieces of metal engraved in her skin over her eyes and forehead. Two smaller ones dotted her cheeks on either side, much like the other people who had been healed by Viktor.
"Only a second," Viktor spoke up, turning in my direction as Whiskers slowly turned her head to look at me. Blinking before finally resting her soft eyes on me. "You will no longer have to live on Shimmer--and I can restore your memories--"
"She told you she ain't interested, Tin Man," Jinx spoke up, wrapping her arm over my shoulders and pulling me to her side, Snapping me out of my trance as I tensed up. "She's perfect just the way she is--Twitches and all."
