At the end of the tunnel, we finally spotted Isha and Whiskers. Isha was peering into a wooden door that was sealed shut by the glowing mold around us. She was looking through claw marks that had pierced straight through the door. And Whiskers stood right by her side, swiveling her head around as the tip of her tail curled around the little girl's ankle. Keeping her close to her side. The sight of the claw marks sent a shiver down my spine, my teeth clenching together. Something was coming--I could feel it. And there was this nagging thought in my mind that Vander was nearby... in whatever form it could be. What wicked beast he could've been.
Vi rounded around me, knocking her body against the door to try and pry it open. It took a few tries, but she finally managed to break through. The door swung up, the mold breaking away to reveal an abandoned office inside. I glanced around Vi's frame, stuffing my hands into my jacket pockets just before squeezing around her and walking inside. Soon the others followed pursuit, but Whiskers' eyes dulled as she tried and failed to get through the doorway. I stole a glance over at her, giving her an apologetic smile before venturing deeper into the office. We split ways, each of us covering a different part of the office to look around for anything that was relevant. Isha struck up a match, lighting up a lantern that hung from the ceiling.
I strayed away from Jinx as she approached a pair of coats hanging on the wall, my eyes falling onto a leash that hung nearby. I ran my fingers over it, eyes studying the metal hook on the end just before my back locked up and a Twitch overcame me. Jerking my head to the side and making me rasp as the all too familiar pink and blue flashes crossed my vision. Remembering the leash my mother used to put on Bane when she was still training him. I gritted my teeth, closing my eyes as I tried and failed not the picture the jagged creature my mother had turned into--a cross between her and Bane. Her mind engulfed into the animal's body to create that--thing. And her piercing purple and gold eyes boring into mine just before she attacked me. It made my shoulders tremble, my head jerking from one side to the next as her roar echoed in the back of my mind.
Whiskers eyes were on me, noticing the Twitch that had overcome my body. She let out a soft squeak, trying to push her shoulders through the door once more and failing to get further. Vi looked over at the large mouse, tilting her head before her eyes followed Whiskers and landed on my shaking frame.
I flinched when I felt a hand go up the bare skin of my spine, my eyes sparking open and turning to see Vi standing behind me. I continued to shake, lips parted as I breathed heavily. Staring at her with wide eyes as she looked down at me with her lips pressed together and her gaze soft. Her fingers trailed further up, going beneath my jacket to follow the curve of my spine before stopping just short of my shirt and trailing back down before finally falling away. She stepped away, turning her gaze to the desk nearby. I let out a soft pant, shaking my head a little as I focused on trying to force the Twitch away. But oddly--it was already gone. My eyes snapped up to Whiskers, seeing her calm down as well as she pulled back from the doorway. I looked back at Vi as she turned her back to me, staring at the logo that was etched into her black jacket. A two-headed dog with their jaws agape. I realized that just by her touch alone--she had effectively washed away the Twitch that had taken hold of me.
She placed one of her gauntlets down on the table, letting it hiss and free her hand just before she moved a cup that was sitting on top of a piece of paper. I took a small step to the side, allowing me to see it better as Jinx turned as well.
"What is it?" Jinx asked, getting closer to look as I stepped up next to Vi to do the same.
"A message from Vander," Vi began to say before her lips twisted and she turned away. "To Silco."
She looked around once more as I laid my hand on the desk, going to read it when Jinx suddenly picked it up herself. Plopping into the chair behind the desk, she dusted the paper off while looking at it closely.
"Silco, I've looked everywhere, but--" Jinx began to read aloud, making me straighten up as my head jerked to the side. The image of Silco's torn face and beady black eye with that orange iris blooming in front of me. And then hearing Vander's voice overlap Jinx's, reading the rest of the letter as if he was here "--it's clear you don't wanna be found. God, I'm shit at this. I'm sorry. When she died, I lost my head. I told myself what I did to you was for the greater good, that you deserved it. But the dirt was on both our hands. Anyway, you know where to find me. Blisters and bedrock. V."
Vi turned back in Jinx's direction as I placed both my hands on the desk to balance myself. Taking in what she just read and registering it in the back of my mind.
"If he found this," Jinx whispered, placing her head in her hand as she stared down at the letter. Vi held her hand up, faltering before it could ever make contact with Jinx's shoulder. "Everything might have been different."
I watched as Vi hesitated before ultimately reaching around Jinx, grabbing her gauntlet and beginning to slip it back on. She turned away, walking around me before pausing with her eyes on the ground. I continued to stare down at the letter, reaching forward and running my hand over Vander's simple signature. Picturing the gentleman standing just over me--his kind smile plastered over his face before my head twitched to the side and I grimaced. Losing focus as yet another Twitch took over.
Vi turned toward me, watching as my back locked up and forced me to stand up taller. Chin tucked down as I tried to control my breathing. She reached forward, grabbing the back of my jacket just at the hem on the bottom before jerking softly. Turning my body in her direction as I winced, my eyes straying up to hers to reveal them glowing softly. She tilted her head slightly, lips pressed together before she let her right gauntlet drop to the ground. Allowing her to pull my head in close to her chest and wrap her arm around my frame. I stiffened slightly, my body tingling once again as she buried her face on the top of my head. Slowly I began to wrap my arms around her frame, pulling her just a tiny bit closer as I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath. Feeling my body relax at her touch. The Twitch subsided faster than I could ever get it to. At that moment, I didn't even care about how angry I was with her. I didn't even care to think about it. All I did was continue to hold her tight, squeezing my eyes just a little tighter as I wished that this could last forever.
