"Y/n."
I turned at the sound of her voice, my shoulders dropping slightly as Vi entered the bedroom I was in an attempt to avoid my mother. She kept asking all kinds of ridiculous questions: "How many Enforcers did those absurd Councilors manage to assemble to fight their battles?" "Who exactly am I not allowed to eat?" "How long have you and Vi been sneaking around?" "Why haven't you chopped off that Kiramman's head yet?"
It. Drove. Me. Insane.
Insane enough to lock myself in a bedroom with a door frame that she couldn't fit her large body through.
Vi dumped what was in her right hand on the bed, allowing me to see more clearly what it was. A large chest piece, arm sleeves that could protect her bare skin from the metal of her gauntlets, and knee pads plated with the same gold metal. Not as flashy as the Enforcer's outfits that we had once worn, but she still wore the badge hung across the belt of her pants.
"You sure about this?" Vi mumbled, knocking my attention away from the clothing back to her. I took in a deep breath, letting it out slowly as my right hand dropped away from the shirt that I was in the middle of clipping together. "You can be with me--up at the--"
"Vi," I interrupted her and placed my hand on her shoulder, letting it run upwards until it cupped her cheek. Her lips squeezed shut, her eyes softening on me as I stood firmly in place. "I'll be okay. And I know you will be, too. No matter what happens--no matter the distance between us--I'll always be there for you. And I know you will for me as well. I know the odds may be against us right now, but as long as we are still standing, we can make it out to the other side."
Vi let out a sigh, tilting her head to the side some as she placed her hand at the curve of my hip and pulled me into her chest. I wrapped my arms around her neck immediately, holding my head against her shoulder as she wrapped her left hand around the back of my neck. Holding me as close as she could as if this could be the last time. And it really could. I didn't know what would become of us after today--after this fight. Whether we would both make it out or not. But the thought of losing Vi made me hold her just a little tighter. I couldn't let that happen--no matter what.
"You always knew what the say," Vi mumbled softly into my ear, pulling away just far enough so our eyes could lock once more. A soft smile began to spread across her lips as she smoothed down the side of my hair, her eyes lingering against it before her brows furrowed together. "You changed your hair."
I chuckled slightly, pulling my head off her shoulder and taking a step back.
"Well--with a battle as big as this one, I thought that I could use a new look," I hummed, waving my metal hand down at my body before I began to smile. "Besides, once this is all said and done, maybe the new look could bring a different kind of excitement to our relationship."
Vi let out a chuckle, shaking her head as she reached forward and grabbed the last chain hanging from my shirt. She clipped it into place, before smoothing her hand across the fabric.
"I like the sound of that," Vi said with a smirk, leaning forward and pressing her lips to mine. I soaked the feeling in, immediately welcoming the rhythm of her lips on mine as I cupped the back of her head. Every time she kissed me, it was like the feeling burned a new hole of excitement that my body immediately reacted to. And it always yearned for more.
Yet--it couldn't last for long. Nothing lasts forever--I should know that by now.
A/N: Little chapter before the big final scene. What's Y/n's new outfit going to be? :) Mmmmm... I guess we'll have to wait for her grand entrance in the next chapter. New hair? Guess we'll wait and see :) Left out the descriptions intentionally to give a bit of suspense.
