Jinx led me into a deeper part of Zaun that even I had never been to. She promised me over and over that Vi would be here--that she had been hanging around her for weeks since she had last fought her. She mentioned time and time again that she had been watching her over the course of days, seemingly bragging that she had found her long before I had even gotten a whiff of her trail. But I remained silent, ignoring her slightly just as we reached the long end of the tunnel we were walking in. Inside, there was a crowd of cheering people holding two different colored cards up into the air. My brows furrowed slightly, recognizing it as a fighting club. Of course--why didn't I think of a place like this to look?
"Wear this."
A cloak was thrown in my direction, and I stumbled to catch it as Jinx threw one over her own head.
"Why?" I snapped, my eyes catching hers as she turned to look at me.
"Because they aren't too welcoming to newcomers--especially ones that don't bet," Jinx said before pointing a thumb back over her shoulder. I followed her gesture, spotting a booth where a large, bulky man was collecting tokens and handing out the two different colored cards in exchange. I sighed, shaking my head some before throwing the cloak around my shoulders. But it didn't cover the long line of hair attached to me--my braid sticking out and scraping the ground. So with bundled-up lips, I reached behind my head and began to wrap my braid around itself, continuing to loop it over and over until I reached the end and created a makeshift bun before pinning it in place with a nearby knife I found lying on the floor. Slicing through the strands before letting it go. "Come on."
Jinx grabbed my elbow, jerking me into the crowd as my eyes widened. I ducked under swinging arms, wincing as men and women alike bellowed out cries or groans as the sound of skin smacking skin vibrated through the air. I followed Jinx through it all, ducking my head every once and a while when someone got too close. She finally stopped in place, turning down to the circular pit below. I turned as well, eyes widening at the sight.
It was definitely Vi--but now her hair was black with hints of her once pink hair streaking through. She was wearing an awful lot of black make-up, streaming down the sides of her cheeks and covering the tattoo of her name on the left side. She wore black lipstick that was smeared and mixed with blood, the black dye of her hair starting to sweat out onto her skin as the man she was fighting pummeled her punch after punch. This wasn't the same Vi I had seen just a week ago--this one was drunk. Too slow to even see the relentless beatings that she endeared. It made me cringe slightly as I watched, recoiling with every punch the man threw her way. Jinx hummed slightly beside me, raising her hand up and showing off a red card pinched between her two fingers just before Vi was knocked to the ground unconscious.
"Well--there's our champion," Jinx sang as we began watching a pair of smaller men grab Vi by her arms and drag her out of the ring. The man she was fighting let out a cry, throwing a fist up in the air like it was an actual accomplishment he just pummeled a drunk woman to unconsciousness. "Let's go get our girl."
Jinx strolled in front of me, pushing her shoulder against mine and turning my body in her direction. My eyes snapped to her, watching her walk away before taking one last glance down at the arena. I turned, walking after Jinx as she intercepted the two men from dragging Vi further away from us.
"I'll take her from here, boys," she hummed, slapping the betting card into one of the men's chests before hoisting Vi's body against her own. I moved forward, staying close to Jinx's backside as the two men shrugged before walking away. I scoffed slightly, shaking my head. So they don't care about shit. Good to know. "Come on, Twitchy, help me carry your girlfriend."
"She's not my girlfriend," I grumbled as I hooked one of my arms under Vi's and began to help drag her out of there.
"Oh, please. You guys are practically married."
"Yeah, well, not anymore," I snapped, glaring over at her. Jinx's eyes wandered over to me as we continued to drag her up the tunnel we had entered through, her brows furrowing together slightly. But she didn't push the topic any longer.
