Inescapable "Fate"

Even demons were meant to wither away when they died. Each and every one of them in those two worlds. They're all the same. Someday, they'll just grow old and die. They'll disappear.

Only the privileged will be remembered. The rest, simply forgotten.

In the end, there's nothing that can be done. Life was never kind to begin with.

By enduring the pain, you'll only be hurting yourself even more.

I've been alive for too long to forget.

"Have you decided Nee-san ? Which path you're going to walk through ?"

I stared at my hand and slowly tightened it into a fist. That boy's question continued to echo in my head, as if to taunt me. When I looked out into the darkness in front of me, I could imagine him standing before me with a smirk on his face. I covered my face with my hands and sighed in dismay. I was frustrated and lost. I didn't know what to do. There were so many things that I wanted to make sure of. There were so many things that I wanted to prevent.

But I couldn't. It's too late.

A cold breeze blew by me which caused me to look up from my hands. Behind me, footsteps. I took a deep breath and sighed before turning around to face the person that was suddenly standing not that far away from me. To my surprise, there was a glint of red.

"You're awake ?", I asked, turning back to the night sky. The footsteps moved closer. Pretty soon, he was standing beside me. "Of course I am", he replied, almost like a whisper, "A majority of us are at this point." From the corner of my eye, I could see him looking up at the night sky. He was doing the same thing that I was. He was looking in the same direction.

"Is the investigation at Meiou already over ?" I felt an arm wrap around my shoulder as I was pulled closer to him. It was a warm and soothing feeling, being like this. "Not necessarily", he replied as he leaned his head against mine, "We're still trying to locate Wakahisa." "So then she's the last one", I mumbled. He nodded. "Once we find her, classes will resume again", he was saying, "Things will go back to how it used to be." Or will it really ?, I asked myself. I brought my hands up and placed them on his arms. "I hope so", I replied softly. "It's been so long. But what'll happen to the others after things go back to normal ?" "They'll have a choice", he said. "They can either choose to remain here, or they can choose to go back to Makai." "But wouldn't that be dangerous ? Considering the fact that the Council can go after them ?" Shuichi grinned. "Good point", he replied. "If that's the case, then they'll have no choice but to stay here. They can start over again." I chuckled. "They're more than welcome."

"Nee, Shuichi, what do you think about "goodbyes" ?" "Why do you ask ?" I closed my eyes and leaned against him. "What if they could go back to Makai", I suggested, "How would you feel about saying goodbye to them, knowing that it might be a while until you could ever meet them again. Or rather, what if you said goodbye, not knowing if you'll ever get the chance to meet each other ever again ? Isn't the thought of it sad ?" "Of course it is", he huffed, "But when you put it like that, it's weird. There are a lot of things we can't avoid. For example, we're human and they're not. There's a large possibility that if we separate now, we won't ever get the chance to meet them again. Because during that time, we might die first, considering the fact that we won't know if the barrier will be accessible, like it is now. And unlike demons, our bodies are extremely delicate. They can live for decades, but we can only live for a few years. It's easy to die when you're a human." I grinned at the thought. "So then does that mean that goodbyes are acceptable ?", I asked. "Only if the goodbyes are mutual", he chuckled, "If not, then no. Besides, when you say "goodbye" to someone, it's not like you're going to forget them completely. Sure, you won't be beside them, but still, you'll have the memory of knowing who they were. I'm pretty sure that that's enough." "I see", I mumbled. "Jah, so then if I suddenly got up and said goodbye to you without reason, would it be acceptable ?"

...!?

"Idiot", he said dryly, "What kind of question is that ?" I winched at the pain. He had some nerve to pinch my cheek. "Leeeh guuuhh", I mumbled, trying to free myself. "Iiiih huuhhhtssh !" And so he did. I quickly brought a hand up my cheek and scowled at him. "Jeez", I said, "It was only a question." "So then if I left you for someone else I could say that it was only just an experiment ?" I stared at him wide eyed before trying to him him on the shoulder. He laughed and caught my hand. "It was only a question." I frowned at him and stared at his hand. "Geh, you sure know how to change things up", I muttered. "Naturally." He let go of my hand and slightly smiled at me. "Someday, if you were to suddenly disappear without saying anything to me, I'd make it a goal to go out and find you", he continued. "And when I do, I really will kill you." I grinned. "Couldn't you have made the ending a bit sweeter ?", I asked. "Nope." "Jah, if you were to suddenly leave me, then I'd probably cry." He laughed. "Cry ?" I nodded my head and looked up at the stars. "Because then I'd be lost..." I gave it some more thought.

"Actually scratch that, Ciel might be the one that you'll have to deal with." "I figured."

Everyday, I see you waste away in this boring place. Aren't you bored of the same routine ?

"Luurè."

He turned around after examining something on the table in front of him. Not that far away, Sachi. "Kana", he replied with a dull smile. I looked past him to see Eion standing in the other room. He was looking down at something with an undisturbed expression. Almost dead. "What is he doing in there ?", I asked. Luurè turned towards the room with Eion and sighed. "There was a rat", he said, shaking his head. I stopped walking and stared at him. He said that yet, there was a cruel smile on his face. Consequences will always come with a cost, I remember him telling me. I never really understood that until I grew to regret my choices. We can no longer turn back and face the demons that we once were. Does it count as running away ?

I was drawn away from my thoughts when I heard a door open. I noticed Eion emerge from the room with blood stains on his clothes. Even his hands were dripping... "Well ?", Sachi asked him. Eion turned to him and feigned his smile. "Nothing", he replied.

That's a lie.
