seventy-nine miles / poem

41 7 13

we hugged each other goodbye
clutching tightly to one another
as if it were the last time
we'd ever see each other
and maybe–
it was.

seventy-nine miles isn't that far
we promised each other
as we waved goodbye.

(i don't think you realised
that my heart was breaking.)

one hour and forty-six minutes isn't that long
we promised each other
as you climbed into
your mother's blue car.

(i don't think you realised
that my heart was breaking.)

three months isn't that long
we promised each other
as i closed the front door
and tried not to cry.

(i don't think you realised
that my heart was breaking.)

but, my love,
it was been three months.
and you're back home now.
i'm not free at all
you said
and i didn't reply.

(maybe you then you realised that my heart was broken?)

and, my dear,
i am terrified
that you have forgotten me
replaced me
don't care about me.

maybe all those nights we spent together
will be gone
in a few words
and a shattered heart.

seventy-nine miles
one hour and forty-six minutes
three months.

(did you never realise that you broke my heart?)
