✽SET IN THE BAD ERA✽

•MODERN AU•

|1988|

You opened your eyes, and noticed that beams of sunlight were leaking through the bedroom windows. Sitting up, you took a long look around the room. The interior never failed to amaze you. You lived with your boyfriend of two years, Michael Jackson, at his Neverland property.

Glancing at the alarm clock that was resting on the bedside table, you noted that the time was one in the afternoon - you had slept a great deal. You saw that the spot next to you was empty - indicating that Michael was out.

He probably left for some work.

You threw covers off of you, and got up from the bed. Slipping on your warm slippers, you noticed that there was a note on your dressing table, along with what looked to be a card. You walked over to it, and realized that it was a note from Michael - along with his credit card.

Picking up the note, you smiled slightly.

Spoil yourself.

You shook your head and picked up the credit card. He always knew how to make you feel special. Letting out a sigh, you left the note and the credit card on the dressing table, and went over to sit down at the edge of the bed.

A moment passed as you scanned the room. You felt empty when Michael wasn't around. Your phone vibrated on the bedside table, catching your attention. With a slight frown, you grabbed the device and turned it on.

You had several notifications on Twitter, something that you were used to. Being Michael's girlfriend meant that you always had notifications on your phone. Most of them were negative, but you tried your best not to let it get to you.

Nevertheless, it did upset you most of the time, and Michael was usually around to comfort you.

Unlocking your phone, you opened the app and scanned the words that had been posted. There were many negative messages, saying that you just weren't worth Michael's time. As you scrolled along, you saw a photo of Michael and Brooke Shields - with a caption that said you would never be enough.

A sigh escaped your lips as you turned the phone screen off. You fell back onto the bed and groaned. The negative comments were out of pure jealousy, and you knew that - but that didn't mean that it didn't affect you.

You hardly ever did anything around the house - the maids did everything, and for a second, you felt useless. There were posts, saying that you were lazy - but you knew those weren't true.

Again, that didn't mean that you weren't affected.

You stared up at the ceiling. You had planned to go shopping, but that plan had changed. After seeing the negativity online, you didn't feel like going out. You felt like a mess, and you just wanted Michael to come home.

You missed him already.

Oh God, help me to get through the day.

You had had a shower, and you had helped reorganize the books in the library. You had spent several hours in the library, and it helped you to keep your mind off of the negativity that you had seen online. Michael was to be home soon, and you could not wait for him to return. You had been rather sad throughout the day, but when the maids asked if you were okay - you insisted that you were. Of course, the words that left your mouth weren't the truth.
