Virgil had been Roman's best friend his entire life, literally. Their parents shared the same room before and after giving birth, both bonding over their pregnancies. They exchanged information and became good friends, forming a bond between their sons as well. As they grew up, Roman stuck by Virgil's side; Virgil never outwardly shared Roman's enthusiasm about most things, but Roman didn't mind too much since he knew Virgil had his own way of expressing himself.

However, even after their friendship had stood the test of middle school and high school and the dreaded social hierarchy of "popular" kids and "losers", Roman was scared. The two boys would be moving for college soon; Roman would be moving to Virginia while Virgil was moving to North Dakota. They wouldn't be down the street and seeing each other every day anymore. College was a much different challenge than not having the same homeroom teacher.

Virgil was nervous, but he seemed to feel better once Roman reassured him that they'd stay strong through the next four years. Roman wished he believed what he told Virgil, but he didn't; he couldn't.

After the tearful goodbyes and the first month of college, everything seemed to balance out. Sure, the classes could be stressful, but Roman would call Virgil every night to remind himself that everything would be okay.

Roman couldn't tell what Virgil was thinking, but he hoped his acting skills weren't betraying him now. He didn't want to worry Virgil or make him panic, so he acted like everything was fine, that his roommate didn't hate his guts, that his professors were great people. Everything was going to be okay, and Roman could keep up this charade.

Until winter break.

As soon as the break started, Roman got the first flight out of Virginia to Florida, it was most likely a layover flight, but he didn't care much; all he could think about was seeing Virgil. After they landed, Roman gathered his bags and made his way to the airport's doors, ready to call a cab to drive him to Virgil's parents' house. "Roman?" Roman froze, 'No way.' Roman slowly turned around and saw Virgil smiling back at him, also carrying his own bags.

Roman didn't care about anything or anyone else at that moment; he dropped his duffel bag and his suitcase before running towards Virgil, jumping into his arms and holding onto him desperately. "I lied; I've been lying to you. College sucks, everyone hates me, I don't understand anything, you're not there to help me, I can't do it." Roman was aware of the tears streaming down his face and staining Virgil's shirt, but he couldn't care less. Virgil was here, and he was finally with Virgil again; he didn't care about anything else.

Virgil rubbed a soothing hand up and down Roman's back. "It's okay, Ro. You'll be okay."

When they were little, Virgil and Roman promised to always be there for each other. During Roman's first semester of college, he was scared that promise had been broken. But as he walked across the stage four years later and received his diploma, smiling at Virgil as he sat beside Roman's parents, he knew Virgil really meant every word he said, and he'd always have his best friend by his side.
