Virgil Black knew he would never be in the right, and he would always be the bad guy, so he stopped trying to prove his innocence, leading to moments like these. He wiped the blood from his nose, more annoyed than in pain. He wasn't sure why the Sunnyvale campers and counselors hated him so much; it might've been because he was the only Shadysider who fought back against the taunting and bullying.

His brother, Logan, pulled on his shoulder and held onto his arm as he dragged him through camp. "Again, Ziggy? How many times have we talked about this? You have to stop getting into fights." Virgil yanked his arm out of his grip, scowling up at his older brother. "First of all, I didn't start it. Second of all, I didn't start the fight; that was all on your bull-" "Watch your mouth." Logan said, dangerously low with a warning glare.

Virgil didn't let on how affected he was by the sudden change in tone as he scoffed and made his way to the nurse's cabin. "Ziggy, can you please try not to get into trouble this summer? If you get in trouble one more time, then we're both kicked out, and I'll be out of a job. You know Mom can't take care of us while she's working."

"Oh, I'm so sorry that you're just now realizing how screwed up the world is," Virgil said in mock sympathy. "No matter what I do, they're going to get me in trouble anyway, and I'm going to be kicked out. So why don't you go to your fake boyfriend and live a fake life where you didn't work all year just to pay for that expensive shirt that you've been wearing all week in an attempt to look cooler and richer. A life where you're not a Shadysider, where you aren't cursed, where I'm not there to ruin everything for you."

Logan kept his glare on the boy, his eyes becoming overwhelmed with frustrated tears. Virgil came to a stop in front of the nurse's cabin and turned to face his brother. He was shocked at the tears in his eyes, but he tried not to let it show, instead rolling his eyes in response.

"I don't know what happened to you. I know Dad's death was hard; it was hard on all of us. But you changed. You're not my brother anymore." "Oh really, what am I then?" Virgil asked, sounding bored. Logan shook his head. "You're a monster."

The word brought the younger brother back to last summer, the day before school started. Some kids cornered Virgil into an alleyway and beat him up. They eventually left but not before carving the word 'monster' into his forearm, a scar that never failed to remind him of the darkness that consumed the world and himself.

Virgil gave a sarcastic smile. "Well, glad you and your new friends agree." He flashed his arm at Logan, watching the way he flinched back in shock. He didn't want to use the injury against his brother. Still, it was the only way he could get the boy to stop trying to act like a completely different person, to stop acting like he was rich and popular with an actual concern for rules (all of which was not Logan in any way).
