Taking chances

Lying on the side walk,

Belly pressed to the tar,

Drip, drip, drip...

Where once it flowed.

Head dangling off the kerb,

Looking into a crimson pool,

Watching his life flow away,

Slowly in the channel.

Eyes wide open,

He stared at me...

I watched as his eyes glazed over,

Never knew his name,

Never heard him speak,

Did not know him at all.

Silently I offered up a prayer,

To God, I believe he knows him.

I tried to save him today,

My first aid was not enough.

Watched as the medics took him away,

All they said was thank you for trying,

Yet I feel I could have done more.

It was his own fault,

He took a chance,

He ran across a busy road,

She could not stop in time.

His head he cracked upon the kerb,

His reward for taking chances.

The only reminder of his passing,

Is the stain he left behind,

A reminder of the consequences.

We are but flesh and bone,

Fragile creatures by design.

R.I.P to the nameless man who died today.

24 February 2015.
