February 13th

'Right, so you move x to the other side of the equation,' you said while writing down your own answer, looking up, monitoring your best friend over your Skype call, as he was listening to your instructions attentively.

'So should it be a negative or a positive?" Mark asked as he looked about ready to toss his maths worksheet into the paper shredder.

'It's a positive,' you said patiently, already used to Mark's frustration and irritation when it came to his most hated subject.

Stifling a yawn with the back of your hand, you took a sneak peek at your phone to check the time. It was 1 am in the morning and both of you had been calling for the past 2 hours just to finish two pages of Math.

He must have noticed your exhaustion, because the angry lines around his eyes softened slightly. 'Sorry to keep you up so late (Y/N), it must suck having a best friend that's terrible at Math huh?"

'It's fine,' you waved his apologies away. 'It's not like we have school tomorrow anyway,' you said. Besides, both of you had been planning these what you guys liked to call 'video study dates' for almost 3 years ever since high school began and the subjects started getting tougher.

You had always hated physics while Mark seemed to be a genius in it so he taught you that in exchange for Math.

'Aren't you going to celebrate Valentine's?' your best friend asked, raising an eyebrow, his equation long forgotten.

'Hmmm, not really,' you shrugged, tucking some hair behind your ear. 'Does staying in my bed and sleeping in all day count as a date?" you asked.

'No it doesn't (Y/N),' Mark chuckled.

'Well, then no I don't have plans tomorrow,' you sighed, resigned to another year of the single life.

'Well,' Mark hesitated for a fraction of a second before asking. 'Do you want to, I don't know grab a coffee or something?' he asked, unblushingly as your heart did a little mini roller-coaster ride in your chest.

Okay, you admitted to yourself. You might have the slightest, slightest most miniscule crush on your best friend. Oh, who were you kidding. You had fallen for him a long long time ago, probably a year after being best friends and had to endure a painful 5 years ever since, but you just didn't want to ruin the delicate balance of friendship, sarcastic remarks and jokes both of you had for so long.

Taking your silence as a bad sign, Mark scratched the back of his neck nervously.

'I mean its okay if you don't want to. I was just thinking that we could you know go as friends, let me repay you for all of this,' he waved his hand indicating all the Maths homework you had tutored him in.

As a friend.

Ouch. Your heart which had been riding high on the roller coaster now plummeted all the way down to the bottom and you tried to swallow the bitter taste at the back of your throat.
