I woke up that morning with a huge smile on my face. Riley had asked me to come over to her house so that we could work out some songs like we used to before, and I couldn't be more happy. I missed when the band would hang out at her house and we'd stay up late jamming to the songs we wrote, as well as cover other songs. However, that was dating back to last summer, when things were quite different. Loads of things had happened since them. Some bad, some for the better.

Our band, Phoenix, hadn't met up in quite a while. We'd all been busy with school: exams, homework, assignments- the usual.
Ever since we'd won the state music competition, things had been relatively drab and monotonous.

"Dad, I'm heading out to Riley's!" I called out, walking towards the front door.
"Want to hear a joke first?" He walked out of the kitchen holding a spatula in hand.
"Dad, are you ever going to stop with the jokes?" I giggled.
"Only when you tell me you love them," he said, and I smiled.
"Never," we both said at the same time, then laughed.

"What does a vegetarian zombie eat?" He said, and I pretended to think about it. Really, I was just watching him stare at me in excitement. Even though we did this every single day, he was still enthusiastic about it. Not one day did my dad not have a new joke to tell me in the morning.

"GRAAAAIIIINNNNS!" He growled, stretching his arms out like a zombie. I bit down on my lip, trying to keep the smile off my face. "I'll be back before dinner, Dad."
He kissed my forehead. "Have fun!"

The walk to Riley's house was fairly short; it was just a few lanes down from the park. On my way there, I caught a glimpse of Ava and Will walking with ice cream cones in their hands.
My heart fluttered when I saw him, but I couldn't help but feel a bit hurt at the sight of Ava. I knew there was something brewing between her and Ted- that was obvious, but I couldn't help but think of the possibility that it was some kind of awkward love-triangle with Will as well. After all, he cared about her a lot. That much was clear with the way he stared after her during the incident in the cafeteria the day before. They were always together. You couldn't see Will without Ava.
I thought it was best to stay away from them as much as possible.

When Riley opened the door to her house, she engulfed me in a bear hug. I giggled. "This is the part where Emma pulls us apart and tells us we saw each other yesterday."
She laughed. "Don't forget the part where Stacy walks in with some kind of complaint about Ace."

I sighed. "We're way too predictable...."
She nodded. "It's about time we changed things up. Speaking of change, this is definitely something," she said, gesturing towards me and her house. "I mean, when was the last time you hung out at my house so we could play music together?"
I thought about it. "I don't know.... Six months?"
She shook her head. "That's an awful long time. Hey- come on in!" She said, and opened the door wider.

As I made my way inside, I felt younger. I recalled all the times Riley and I would jump on the couch and play Just Dance in the living room, collect rocks and play tag in the backyard and play music in her basement.
It was like revisiting a younger version of myself.
