When I was little, I had a best friend named Ashley. We did everything together. There was never a time when Dad said my name without Ashley's following after. We were inseparable. But a year ago, all that changed. I fail to remember what came in between that friendship.
The community park was right outside my window. Seeing that place brought back a flood of nostalgia, as I'd been there countless times before, when I was younger.
Before my mind could protest against it, I opened my window and climbed out of it, knowing that I should be back before sunset so that Ava and I could drop off Granddad at his first date, which he was very excited for.
The sky was a kaleidoscope of colors. The breezed seemed to be howling with the secrets of my past, and the trees were thrilling with memories. As I jogged in silence along the same old pavement, the only thing my mind seemed to be capable of doing was directing me to the backbone of my childhood: The Playground. Hastily kicking off my shoes, I plunged into the soft white sand and made my way towards the rusty old swing set.
"Ha! I bet you can't go this high!" I squealed, kicking my feet harder in the air. "Look, I can almost see the birds!"
"I can see the clouds from here,"gasped Ashley in awe. Wonder was written all over her face as she gaped at the colors of the sunset.
Ash. It'd been a while since her name had rolled off my tongue. She used to be the type of girl who was always bubbling with enthusiasm and showering everyone with her optimism. With her adorable dimples and angelic smile, she was the type of girl who'd made her way into every boy's heart. She was the type of girl who I just loved to hate, yet was still my best friend.
The thought of her stirred something in me and I couldn't get myself to swing any longer. Tired, I dragged myself onto the monkey bars. Little did I know that that was going to be a whole other chapter to rewind to.
"I'm on top of the world!" Shouted Ash, standing on top of the monkey bars, her light brown hair fanning out behind her. Hand in hand, we glanced down at the park below us as if it were a court of disciples and we were their rulers.
The park as a whole now made me feel uneasy. What happened to us? There had to be some reason as to why Ashley had chosen to step out of my life. We were best friends since we were seven and now we were strangers who merely nodded heads in the hallways. Travelling back the history we shared, I came to realize just how huge of an impact Ash had on my life. She meant everything to me. Even in those delicate growing phases of my life, she played a crucial role and shaped my personality.
Making my way onto the colorful plastic castle that housed my all-time favorite, the slide, the reason finally dawned on me.
"How could you replace me like that?"she shouted. I put my hands up in protest. "I didn't replace you!" I shouted back, with equally matched ferocity. We were sixteen then, yet still hadn't gotten over our playground phase. It was still our favorite place in the world, and back then, we didn't think anything could change that.
